Position Overview
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies within the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota is seeking qualified individuals to fill roles as teaching specialists or lecturers. These positions are essential for delivering courses that are not available through regular faculty or graduate student staffing.
Appointments may vary in terms of hours and duration, potentially covering either full-time or part-time roles for a single semester. This announcement serves to create a candidate pool for potential openings during the academic year.
Selected applicants will be engaged as needed throughout the academic term, with opportunities for renewal based on departmental requirements, available funding, and individual performance.
Responsibilities
Teaching specialists and lecturers are responsible for instructing 1-3 courses each semester. While most assignments will focus on introductory language classes, there may be rare opportunities to teach literature or cultural courses depending on departmental needs.
Class schedules may be arranged for daytime or evening sessions. Responsibilities include:
- Course preparation and instructional delivery
- Grading and assessment of student work
- Holding weekly office hours, including availability in the Tutor Lab for language courses
- Administering proficiency assessments
- Providing administrative support to the department as required
Qualifications
Required:
- A Master's degree in Spanish, Portuguese, or a related field in Education, Humanities, or Social Sciences for Teaching Specialist roles.
- A Ph.D. in Spanish, Portuguese, or a related field for Lecturer positions.
- Native or near-native proficiency in the language(s) of instruction.
- A minimum of two years of post-secondary teaching experience in the relevant language or a related discipline.
- A demonstrated commitment to high-quality teaching and program development.
- Strong communication skills in English.
Preferred:
- Positive feedback from students, peers, or supervisors.
- Previous teaching experience at a similar course level.
- Progressive instructional experience in the relevant language.
- Proven success in teaching, collaboration, and student mentorship.

Established in the 1960s, the Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities is recognized for its innovative approach to the interdisciplinary study of language, literature, and cultural expressions, grounded in comprehensive socio-historical perspectives.
We offer undergraduate degrees in Spanish and Spanish and Portuguese Studies, as well as graduate degrees (MA and PhD) with specializations in Hispanic literatures and cultures, Hispanic linguistics, and Lusophone literatures and cultures.
