Job Overview

The ZACHARY SCOTT THEATER CENTER is a distinguished non-profit organization dedicated to crafting intimate theatrical experiences that spark creativity, uplift spirits, and foster community engagement. The Theatrical Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the secure functioning of all stage apparatus and the implementation of stage rigging and automation as specified by the Technical Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the timely and cost-effective delivery of all rigging, automation, and stage operations requirements for various productions and events.
  • Oversee the safe, prompt, and economical setup, maintenance, enhancement, and organization of all stage equipment and systems, including counterweight fly systems, fire safety systems, stage automation, and personal protective equipment, while coordinating specialized vendor repairs and inspections.
  • Lead the Stage Operations Team and Run Crew in maintaining scenic and property elements throughout each production.
  • Manage inventory, supplies, and budgets related to materials, rigging, safety equipment, and other stage operations expenditures.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and contract necessary stagehands and crew for each production.
  • Collaborate closely with the Technical Director to plan production logistics for load-ins, strikes, and changeovers.
  • Assess load-in staffing needs, communicate overhire requirements, and supervise all additional load-in personnel in conjunction with the Technical Director.
  • Foster a positive and proactive work environment that emphasizes problem-solving, teamwork, and interdepartmental support.
  • Coordinate with the rental department to ensure adequate staffing for facility rentals.
  • Process time sheets and negotiate compensation for stage operations personnel.
  • Lead annual safety training sessions in collaboration with the Technical Director and enforce safety protocols across all venues, ensuring staff training complies with applicable standards.
  • Maintain and update the Production Overhire Database for personnel records.
  • Ensure a clean, safe, and organized workplace and venue environment.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • A minimum of three years of supervisory experience in stage operations or management within a professional regional theater setting is preferred.
  • ETCP Rigging Certification in progress or completed is advantageous.
  • A valid driver's license and reliable transportation are required.

  • Ability to supervise crews across multiple projects and venues simultaneously.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with guest artists and resident staff to advance organizational and artistic objectives.
  • Capacity to anticipate and resolve challenges that affect multiple departments.
  • Proficiency in designing and implementing stage lighting and special effects for productions, rentals, concerts, and special events.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with attention to detail in documentation.

Work Environment:

This position is based on-site and requires flexibility in scheduling, including nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary. The role involves physical demands such as climbing ladders, working at heights, and lifting up to 70 pounds. The work environment may vary in noise levels.

Reports to: Director of Production

Supervises: Lead Electrician, Programmer and Lighting Board Operator, Overhire Crew

Supports: Production, Development, Education, Rentals

Peer Collaboration: Communicates with Lighting Supervisor, Properties Manager, Technical Director, Manager of Costume Shop, Production Coordinator, Company Manager, Manager of Audio/Video, and Wardrobe Supervisor.
