Lead Educator for School Age Child Care

This role is pivotal in advancing the mission and initiatives of the Y, a prominent nonprofit organization dedicated to community service. The Lead Educator for School Age Child Care (SACC) at the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA is tasked with providing direct oversight and guidance to a group of children and SACC Teachers within a structured child care program. This position emphasizes the enhancement of self-esteem, encouragement of independence, and respect for individuality among participants. The Lead Educator is responsible for designing a program that nurtures children's social, physical, spiritual, and cognitive development. Furthermore, this role ensures the well-being of each child in alignment with YMCA of the USA standards and organizational policies, adhering to established training protocols.

- Executes programs in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared thoroughly, and supports participants and staff in reaching their objectives.
- Oversees and supports SACC Teachers, Teacher Assistants, and Volunteers at the designated site, including recruitment and training efforts.
- Engages in proactive communication with supervisors, staff, program participants, and parents.
- Ensures cleanliness and safety of program participants, areas, equipment, and supplies.
- Maintains a vigilant presence, staying alert at all times while on duty, ensuring constant visual monitoring of participants, remaining aware of surroundings, and actively engaging in all program activities.
- Familiarizes with, reviews, and enforces all emergency protocols, responding to emergencies promptly in accordance with YMCA policies, and completing necessary reports.
- Understands, adheres to, and enforces all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including those for child abuse prevention and the rule of three.
- Acts as an ambassador for all YMCA programs, particularly focusing on Child Care initiatives and member engagement to foster loyalty among those served.
- Complies with all Child Care procedures and guidelines, including health and safety standards, child supervision, discipline policies, attendance, forms, reports, supplies, and staff expectations as mandated by the YMCA, licensing authorities, and state health regulations.
- Participates in all required meetings and training sessions.

Developing Self & Others: Invests in personal growth and supports others (e.g., staff, volunteers, members, program participants) to achieve their highest potential.
Program/Project Management: Ensures that program or project objectives are met and that the intended impact is realized.

Qualifications
- Must be at least 20 years of age.
- Must possess one of the following qualifications (A or B):
- A:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 1080 hours of documented supervised experience over a nine-month period, including work with children in a program adhering to similar standards.
- Twelve (12) credits in early childhood education or child development, elementary education, recreation, group social work, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher education with program approval from a Board of Governors of Higher Education.
- B:
- A bachelor's degree in early childhood education or child development.
- At least 360 hours of documented supervised experience with children of the same ages to be served, along with one semester of student teaching with children of the same ages/developmental stages.
- Upon hire, must provide documentation of a physical examination and a TB Tine Test, to be renewed every two years.
- Must submit Office of Early Childhood Background Check and fingerprinting forms within 30 days of hire.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is advantageous.
- Must demonstrate the ability to plan and implement developmentally appropriate activities.
- Proven capability to teach and assist in educational activities.
- Acts as a positive role model, demonstrating integrity and adaptability.
- Maintains composure and objectivity under pressure or when faced with challenges.
- Possesses effective communication skills necessary for informing, counseling, motivating, and supporting members.
- Must be observant, safety-conscious, and able to respond calmly and swiftly in emergencies.
- Availability to work flexible schedules is required.
- Must complete New Employee Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, Mandated Reporter, Bloodborne Pathogens, Employee Safety, and Hazard Communication trainings prior to starting the position.
- Must complete Child Abuse Prevention and Mandated Reporter trainings before initial assignment to the role.
- Connecticut Child Care CPR/First Aid certification must be obtained within 6 months of hire and maintained.
- Administration of Medications certification is preferred.
- Continue professional development as outlined in the State of Connecticut Office of Early Childhood licensing requirements (complete hours of training equal to or greater than 20% of hours worked) as well as any/all training required by the YMCA and other accrediting bodies.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to communicate effectively. The employee frequently stands, walks, uses hands for various tasks, and reaches with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this role include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires sitting for extended periods and repetitive data entry. The employee must be able to run, walk, or stand and fully engage in camp activities for up to 8 hours.
Work Environment
This position operates within a recreational and educational setting. The role routinely utilizes standard sports and recreation equipment, including gym and office equipment. Occasionally, employees may encounter undesirable working conditions, communicable diseases, and potential risks of injury from others. All employees are required to adhere to the preventative health policies of the YMCA at all times. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate to high.
