Position Title: Subsurface Utility Locator I

The Subsurface Utility Locator I is tasked with identifying, locating, and marking the positions of all underground utilities to reduce the risk of damage or service disruption during construction excavation activities. This role involves traversing various terrains (grass, gravel, ditches) in and around construction sites and residential, commercial, industrial, and rural areas under diverse weather conditions.

Compensation: $23.00 per hour

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes and maintains a variety of company-issued locating tools and equipment, ensuring proper usage, storage, and maintenance.
  • Collects GPS pinpointed data to accurately map the locations of underground utilities, including electric power, gas, water, cable television, and sewer systems.
  • Locates and marks natural gas pipelines.
  • Documents data regarding excavated utilities on job sites, including potholes and cross bores.
  • Interprets maps and blueprints to identify the presence of underground utilities.
  • Thoroughly maps underground utilities in designated areas, updating collection maps, completing necessary documentation, and effectively photographing each job site.
  • Completes all tasks in an organized and timely manner, adhering to standard operating procedures.
  • Removes and replaces manhole covers as necessary.
  • Utilizes a laptop or other electronic devices to receive and document the status of excavation notices.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisors, operational support, and clients.
  • Reports any field issues that may pose safety risks.
  • Conducts project quality control.
  • Performs all duties in a SAFE manner in both private and public work areas.

  • Excellent communication skills with the general public.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often in challenging weather conditions.
  • Must be capable of navigating and inspecting all areas of the job site in various weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
  • Exposure to typical construction site hazards.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members.
  • Ability to pass motor vehicle and criminal background checks, and comply with a drug-free workplace policy.
  • Proficient in English for record-keeping, order placement, and preparing simple narrative reports.
  • Willingness and ability to acquire additional skills.
Experience and Education:
  • Experience in locating underground utilities is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Entry-level training in basic locating techniques provided by Sitewise, lasting up to 45 days.
  • Entry-level HIP technician training, including screening locate requests, interpreting prints, and learning HIP processes such as field audits and basic standbys.
  • Introduction to special projects such as Pipe to Soil, Leak Survey, Atmospheric Corrosion, and Line Marker Installs.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered on a year-to-year basis.
  • A minimum of one year in described job roles is required before advancement.
Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:
  • A valid State of Residence Driver's License is required.
  • Candidates must successfully pass criminal and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) background checks and a pre-employment drug screening.
