Job Summary

The Public Safety Communications Specialist will provide critical support to the Virginia Community College System by serving as the primary point of contact for emergency and non-emergency situations. This role will be responsible for receiving and transmitting radio messages, directing public safety officials to emergency calls, and maintaining accurate records of communications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate public safety communications equipment in accordance with established guidelines
  • Receive and transmit radio messages in compliance with FCC regulations and departmental policies
  • Direct public safety officials and emergency responders to emergency and non-emergency calls
  • Process requests for service via telephone, radio, and community app
  • Initiate prompt and effective action to ensure all calls for service are handled professionally
  • Maintain a computerized daily communications log
  • Provide administrative support by collecting, organizing, and retrieving data from computerized systems
  • Monitor campus security and alarm systems
Requirements
  • Experience as a dispatcher, preferably with a police department or campus police
  • Ability to receive and transmit information to ensure timely and proper response to emergency situations
  • Ability to operate, learn, and be proficient on Omnigo Dispatch, Kenwood Radio System, Everbridge, Informacast Emergency Notification Systems, and TCC Community App
  • Ability to multitask and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to speak clearly and effectively control conversations with distressed callers
  • Ability to obtain data via phone and radio
  • Ability to read maps, reference books, technical manuals, and related correspondence
  • Ability to respond calmly to emergency and crisis situations
