**Job Summary**

The New York State Department of Transportation is seeking highly motivated and skilled individuals to fill the position of Engineer Trainee/Assistant Engineer. As a key member of our team, you will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects, from design and construction to traffic management and safety systems.

**Responsibilities**

  • Work under the direction and supervision of a licensed professional engineer to design and develop transportation projects, including highways, railroads, bridges, airports, and waterways.
  • Perform site investigations, prepare engineering drawings, and develop construction estimates.
  • Assist in public outreach and provide construction support.
  • Supervise and review the work of engineering technicians and draft project reports.
  • Perform quality control review of project documents to ensure consistency with Department standards and for constructability.
  • Assist in the development of traffic control devices and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).
  • Perform complex operational analyses for system optimization and coordinate ITS.
  • Support department needs in other locations, including participating remotely or occasional travel as necessary.

**Requirements**

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology, or proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and one year of full-time engineering experience.
  • Valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and/or access to reliable transportation.
  • Ability to demonstrate travel requirements of the position.

**Working Conditions**

Incumbents may be required to work in a fast-paced environment, with occasional overnight stays, night work, and weekend work. They may also be required to participate in the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
