Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Patient Care Specialist to join our team at the University of Michigan Hospital. As a Patient Care Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to our patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Observation and Monitoring: Obtain vital signs, temperature, height/length, weight, oxygen saturation, and pain scores; report abnormal values to the Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Specimen Collection: Perform point-of-care testing, maintain and calibrate equipment and supplies, collect blood specimens from arterial, CVP, and PIC lines, and transport blood and laboratory specimens.
  • Intravenous Lines: Discontinue peripheral IVs, remove peripheral IV dressings, prime peripheral and central/pressure heparin set-ups, and time and date bags/tubing per policy.
  • Patient ADLs: Assist patients with or administer routine personal hygiene, including baths, oral care, skin care, umbilical cord, and circumcision care.
  • Tube Feedings: Perform tube feedings of patients at the direction of the RN and after the RN has established placement just prior to each tube feeding.
  • Urinary Catheters: Perform intermittent sterile urinary catheterizations, connect, drain, and disconnect urinary catheters, and assemble intermittent bladder irrigation supplies.
  • Enemas/Suppositories: Administer cleansing enemas that do not contain medication and apply external fecal incontinence device bags.
  • Wound Care: Cleanse and redress non-sterile wounds, perform simple sterile dressing changes, and assist RN with complex dressing changes.
  • Respiratory Care: Assist with tracheostomy care, perform endotracheal/tracheostomy tube suctioning, provide ventilation to the intubated/trached patient with an Ambu bag, and coach/prompts patient to use incentive spirometer.
  • Other Interventions: Measure and obtain TED hose, apply sequential compression devices, perform post-mortem care, and transport deceased patients to the morgue/pathology.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent; Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) or Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or junior status in an accredited BSN program or 2nd year in accredited ADN program or Bachelors Degree in Applied Medical Science.
  • Experience: A minimum of 1 year recent experience in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting, such as nurse aide in a hospital setting, or a minimum of 2 years experience in such a role in a nursing home or other healthcare environment.
  • Skills: Ability to read and write, basic computer skills, and coursework in an Allied Health field.
