Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Patient Care Specialist to join our team at the University of Michigan Hospital. As a Patient Care Specialist, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and support to our patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities
  • Obtain vital signs, temperature, height/length, weight, oxygen saturation, and pain scores, and report abnormal values to the Registered Nurse (RN).
  • Respond to monitor alarms and utilize palpation/auscultation and Doppler to determine heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Observe, monitor, and report the overt physical condition of assigned patients.
  • Measure and record intake and output.
  • Function as a sitter and assist the physician/provider during diagnostic procedures.
  • Apply and change ECG electrodes and pulse ox probe, and attach patients to travel (ECG and A-line) monitors.
  • Place monitor strips on inpatient records.
Specimen Collection
  • Perform point of care testing, maintain, and calibrate equipment and supplies.
  • Collect blood specimens from arterial, CVP, and PIC lines.
  • Collect specimens, including urine, stool, sputum, and swabs, and perform urine determination, including sugar, acetone, specific gravity, protein, and pH.
  • Perform finger/heel stick blood collection and chemstick test.
  • Initiate, maintain, and record 24-hour urine collection.
  • Transport blood and laboratory specimens.
Intravenous Lines
  • Discontinue peripheral IVs and remove peripheral IV dressings.
  • Prime peripheral (without additives) and central/pressure heparin set-ups (after bag spiked by RN).
Patient ADLs
  • Assist patients with or administer routine personal hygiene, including baths, oral care, skin care, umbilical cord, and circumcision care.
  • Perform preventative skin care, pre-operative preps, and perineal care.
  • Provide toileting/bedpan/urinal, remove/empty foley catheters, and weigh diapers.
  • Accompany, escort, ambulate, move, turn, dangle, lift, transport, and attend/hold/position patients.
  • Assist with range of motion, apply rehabilitation equipment, release, and apply devices, such as wheelchair seatbelts, adaptive equipment, etc., in accordance with specific instructions, to position patients to limit movements.
  • Provide patient nourishment by performing duties such as passing and collecting trays, providing snacks/beverages, assist with ordering meals/snacks, and feed patients.
Tube Feedings
  • Perform tube feedings of patients, at the direction of the RN, and after the RN has established placement just prior to each tube feeding.
Urinary Catheters
  • Perform intermittent sterile urinary catheterizations.
  • Perform clean urinary catheterizations (Pediatrics only).
  • Connect, drain, and disconnect urinary catheters.
  • Assemble intermittent bladder irrigation supplies.
  • Discontinue urinary catheters.
  • Apply condom catheter.
  • Determine bladder status with Bladder Scanner.
Enemas/Suppositories
  • Administer cleansing enemas that do not contain medication.
  • Apply external Fecal Incontinence Device bags.
Wound Care
  • Cleanse and redress non-sterile wounds.
  • Perform simple sterile dressing changes, as in central line dressings.
  • Assist RN with complex dressing changes.
  • Care for permanent drainage sites and apply appropriate collection device, i.e., ostomy, G-tube, etc.
  • Apply binders, ACE wraps, hot and cold applications, provide soaks, and special baths.
Respiratory Care
  • Assist with tracheostomy care on stable tracheotomies, including cleaning and redressing area, and assist with tape and tie changes.
  • Perform endotracheal/tracheostomy tube suctioning after assessment by RN of patient stability.
  • Provide ventilation to the intubated/trached patient with an Ambu bag.
  • Assist with Endotracheal tube care and tape changes.
  • Assist with P&PD by holding the patient.
  • Measure and record chest tube drainage, set-up Pleurevac, check Pleurevac water levels, and notify RN prn.
  • Coach/prompts patient to use incentive spirometer, and in coughing and deep breathing.
  • Perform routine nasal and/or oral suctioning.
Other Interventions
  • Measure and obtain TED hose, apply Sequential Compression Devices.
  • Perform post-mortem care and transport deceased patients to the morgue/pathology.
  • Respond to call lights and alarms, answer unit telephone, and relay messages prn.
  • Empty and measure drainage collection and emesis.
  • Assist RN with admissions, discharges, and transfers.
  • Provide skin care at the direction of the RN, applying select topical emollients containing medication.
  • Initiate emergency care utilizing the ABCs - Airway, Breathing, Circulation.
  • Transport materials, supplies, medications, specimens, patient belongings, equipment, and medical records.
  • Perform patient care comfort-safety rounds per unit routine.
  • Assist with application and maintain restraints.
  • Document care provided.
  • Perform 12-lead ECG.
Environment
  • Stock supplies and equipment in patient care spaces.
  • Set up patient rooms for admission or procedure.
  • Make up beds with linen, change bed linens, and linen hamper during patient stay.
  • Maintain orderliness of the patient room and unit, including equipment/cords, linen, trash, patient belongings, etc.
  • Clean and maintain inventory and outdates of equipment and supplies in patient care spaces.
  • Clean assigned equipment and areas of work.
  • Obtain, open, and arrange sterile instruments and supplies for specific procedures.
  • Clean, pack, sterilize, and store instruments.
  • Check emergency equipment.
  • Perform clerical duties prn.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Certified Nurse Aide (or) Certified Medical Assistant (or) junior status in an accredited BSN program (or) 2nd year in accredited ADN program (or) Bachelors Degree in Applied Medical Science.
  • A minimum 1-year recent experience in an unlicensed assistive role in a patient care setting, such as nurse aide in a hospital setting (or) a minimum two years experience in such a role in a nursing home or other healthcare environment.
  • Ability to read and write.
Desired Qualifications
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Coursework in an Allied Health field.
