Chemical Process Specialist

The Chemical Process Specialist plays a crucial role in managing the implementation, initiation, and functionality of innovative processes. This position also entails delivering on-site operational assistance, pinpointing and assessing ongoing process enhancement opportunities, aiding in local capital project planning and execution, and ensuring the establishment, maintenance, and advancement of process safety management systems.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the creation of recovery processes for nickel, cobalt, lithium, and various metals and materials derived from batteries.
- Transform processes from laboratory scale to full-scale production.
- Establish engineering and operational parameters from laboratory phase through scaling and full production.
- Support the development and adjustment of material and energy balances as necessary.
- Conduct Technical Economic Assessments (TEA) on various processes.
- Facilitate the exchange of technical information and resource allocation with external partners.
- Promote Health, Safety, and Environmental (HS&E) enhancement initiatives and ensure compliance, including Process Safety Management (PSM) and EPA Risk Management Plan (RMP) considerations.
- Engage in process PHA assessments and lead the resolution of identified PHA issues.
- Participate in, facilitate, and support additional site PSM components such as management of change (MOC), incident investigation, document management, employee training, and pre-startup safety reviews (PSSR).
- Support the creation of standard operating procedures (SOP), commissioning, and maintenance plans for newly installed process equipment.
- Identify and lay the groundwork for executing continuous improvement initiatives.
- Act as a local resource within the facility for capital project planning and execution.
- Lead troubleshooting efforts and provide technical assistance to operations as required.
- Develop and implement time studies to optimize battery disassembly, teardown, and staging processes.
- Recommission pilot processing lines and assess improvements to pilot systems.
- Identify, design, and conduct small-scale pilot studies to enhance operational parameters or profitability.
- 3-5 years of experience in process engineering within the chemical sector or a related field.
- Familiarity with process design, unit operations, and fundamental process control.
- Self-motivated with the capability to work independently to meet work objectives.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.
