Position Overview

The American Lung Association offers a valuable opportunity for a Communications Intern. This role is designed for individuals eager to gain hands-on experience in the marketing and communications sector while contributing to a vital mission: enhancing lung health and preventing lung diseases through advocacy, education, and research.

The intern will collaborate with the staff of the American Lung Association to support various marketing and communications initiatives, providing a platform to learn and grow within the field.

Internship Details

This is an unpaid internship requiring a commitment of at least 15 hours per week, with a flexible schedule. Candidates must be eligible for academic credit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a foundational understanding of the American Lung Association's mission and operations.
  • Engage in media monitoring and utilize various social media and Microsoft Office applications for training.
  • Participate in team meetings and professional development opportunities.

Communications Duties

  • Provide administrative support for communications to familiarize with event-related terminology.
  • Assist in creating media materials, including press releases, fact sheets, and media pitches.
  • Compile media clips, update media lists, and contribute to communications reports.
  • Contribute creative ideas for communication strategies related to events and advocacy.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand media monitoring and social media best practices.
  • Gain insights into non-profit organizational structures and communications strategies.
  • Learn effective media relations techniques, including planning and reporting.
  • Enhance collaboration and team-building skills.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Pursuing a bachelor's degree in fields such as Non-Profit Management, Public Relations, Communications, or Marketing.
  • Must qualify for academic credit for the internship.
  • Enthusiastic, reliable candidates with a passion for public relations and communications are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong writing skills, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in the American Lung Association's mission are essential.
  • Ability to multitask, work collaboratively, and demonstrate a willingness to learn.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Ability to lift and carry supplies as needed.
  • All interns must adhere to a smoke-free workplace policy.

Documentation Requirements

Prior to the commencement of the internship, candidates must provide documentation from an accredited institution confirming eligibility for academic credit.
