Job Summary

The University of Chicago College is in search of a Communications Specialist to become a vital member of its communications team. This role is essential in promoting the College as a distinguished liberal arts undergraduate program within a leading global research university to both external and internal stakeholders.

As part of University Communications, the College communications team provides tailored support to the undergraduate College while also contributing to broader initiatives aimed at enhancing the University of Chicago's global standing.

The Communications Specialist will be instrumental in implementing the College's communication strategies, assisting with media outreach, and creating content for the College's digital platforms and social media channels. This position reports directly to the Director of College Communications, who also serves as the Associate Dean of the College.

Responsibilities

  • Craft media materials, including press releases, advisories, opinion pieces, and pitches.
  • Compile media lists and engage with journalists to secure coverage of the College's initiatives in various news outlets, focusing on significant announcements, trends, and showcasing faculty and staff as thought leaders.
  • Research and compose feature articles highlighting student life, academic achievements, and news relevant to the College.
  • Maintain the College's public calendar and oversee its social media presence.
  • Support other communication efforts within the College and its partners, emphasizing resources available to undergraduates.
  • Disseminate mass communications regarding major announcements and facilitate email correspondence between the Dean of Students office and College students and families.
  • Execute assigned tasks through various communication methods, including written content, visual media, and personal interactions, while continuing to develop knowledge and skills.
  • Enhance understanding of the University, its processes, and its stakeholders.
  • Perform additional related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:
A college or university degree in a relevant field is required.

Work Experience:
A minimum of 2-5 years of experience in a related role is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:
2-4 years of experience in journalism, public relations, or communications is preferred.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, along with sound news judgment, are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite is required. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are important.
