Job Summary

The City of Hemet, CA is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Building Inspector I to join our team in the Department of Life Safety. As a Building Inspector I, you will be responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations, conducting inspections, and providing excellent customer service to the public and City staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct residential and commercial field inspections to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations.
  • Check building plans and specifications for compliance with various codes.
  • Issue standard construction and occupancy permits and approve final inspection certificates.
  • Ensure compliance with building and related codes and regulations.
  • Inspect the quality of materials and methods of construction for various building components.
  • Interpret codes and regulations and explain required inspections and construction requirements to owners, architects, engineers, contractors, and the public.
  • Investigate and resolve building and related complaints.
  • Maintain records and files of inspections made and actions taken on a database.
  • Issue vacate and stop work orders and correction notices.
  • Assist Code Enforcement in performing their inspections.
Requirements
  • Two years of journey level building construction experience, or 1 year of municipal permit technician or building inspection experience and a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record.
  • Possession of an International Code Council (ICC) or other recognized state or national organization's Building Inspection certificate within one year of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in construction inspection services within a municipal organization.
  • Experience in permit issuance or construction inspection.
  • Experience in interpreting and applying building codes and related regulations.
  • Experience in conducting field inspections of residential and non-residential construction.
