Job Overview

Position Summary: The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) delivers essential care in a medical-surgical environment. This role focuses on fulfilling the communication requirements of patients and their families. The CNA assists individuals with daily living activities, provides fundamental nursing support to patients in critical condition, and helps maintain a safe and hygienic atmosphere under the guidance of the supervising registered nurse. Participation in quality improvement initiatives is also a key responsibility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administers basic nursing support to critically ill patients, addressing both psychosocial and physical needs within the CNA's professional scope.
  • Ensures effective communication with patients.
  • Exhibits proactive performance that reflects the accountability expected of a nursing assistant.
  • Completes various tasks, including end-of-shift responsibilities, as assigned within the CNA's professional scope.
  • Assists with the admission, transfer, and discharge processes of patients.
  • Performs fundamental patient care duties, including morning and evening care, tailored to the specific needs of diverse patient populations, including pediatric and geriatric patients.
  • Alerts licensed personnel when patients express discomfort.
  • Effectively communicates any observed changes in patient condition to the registered nurse, maintaining awareness of the needs of various patient demographics.
  • Assists with feeding patients and ensuring proper fluid intake, employing techniques suitable for the patient's age and health status.
  • Provides clear explanations to patients and their families prior to administering care, addressing inquiries within the CNA's scope.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform treatments and provide services within the defined professional boundaries.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with supervisors, colleagues, and nursing staff.
  • Collaborates with other departments as necessary to address the comprehensive needs of patients.
  • Conducts all patient care activities in a manner that prioritizes safety and minimizes the risk of medical errors.
  • Assists nurses with procedures and performs tasks requiring technical skills under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Exhibits flexibility, organization, and the ability to function effectively in high-pressure situations.
  • Responds promptly to patients in emergencies or distressing situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Engages professionally with patients and their families, involving them in the care planning process.
  • Maintains positive working relationships within the department and across other departments.
  • Adheres to current documentation standards and completes necessary paperwork within the designated shift.
  • Operates equipment safely and competently.
  • Coordinates and oversees patient care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Practices medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures.

Professional Expectations:

  • Follows the dress code, ensuring a neat and clean appearance.
  • Completes annual educational requirements, including mandatory training and competency checklists.
  • Maintains compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Ensures patient confidentiality is upheld at all times.
  • Punctually reports to work as scheduled and completes assigned tasks within the designated timeframe.
  • Displays identification while on duty and utilizes the computerized timekeeping system accurately.
  • Completes required training sessions promptly.
  • Participates in staff meetings and relevant committees as appropriate.
  • Undergoes annual laboratory and TB testing in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Adheres to all organizational policies regarding ethical practices.
  • Represents the organization positively and professionally.
  • Communicates the mission, vision, and core values of the hospital effectively.
  • Strives to maintain a cooperative working relationship with physicians, departments, and staff.
  • Ensures compliance with policies related to department operations, fire safety, and infection control.
  • Demonstrates adherence to hourly rounding protocols.
  • Responds promptly to call lights and does not pass them without addressing the request.
  • Updates patient room whiteboards as required.
  • Completes assignments within the specified timeframes, utilizing effective time management.
  • Employs AIDET principles in interactions.

Regulatory Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Successful completion of a certified nursing assistant program is preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification is required.
  • A minimum of six months to one year of relevant work experience is preferred.
