Position Overview

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is at the forefront of advancing energy independence and enhancing national security through innovative research in earth systems science, engineering, and decision analytics. Our mission is to tackle intricate challenges within the dynamic interactions of the Earth system.

The Sensing, Measurement & Forecasting team, part of the Earth System Predictability & Resiliency Group, is on the lookout for talented individuals to spearhead critical initiatives and contribute to multidisciplinary projects. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Designing and implementing cutting-edge sensing technologies for earth system science and renewable energy applications. These next-generation sensors are engineered to be fast, precise, and adaptable, suitable for deployment in demanding environments such as deep subsurface and Arctic regions.
  2. Assessing the ecological effects of traditional hydropower and marine renewable energy systems by utilizing underwater acoustic telemetry to monitor aquatic life.
  3. Investigating and addressing the ecological impacts of wind energy through the detection and tracking of avian species using radio telemetry.
  4. Creating innovative energy-harvesting solutions for compact sensors and remote sensing platforms.

Key Responsibilities

The primary focus of this role encompasses:

  • Advanced sensor design and experimental validation.
  • Digital signal acquisition in controlled laboratory environments.
  • Data processing and analytical interpretation.
  • Development of intellectual property.
  • Preparation of high-impact scholarly publications.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD obtained within the last five years or expected within the next eight months from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in applied physics, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering with a specialization in acoustics.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.5.
  • Knowledge of sound propagation theory and modeling.
  • Expertise in acoustic signal processing.
  • Practical experience in the design and testing of acoustic telemetry systems.
  • Familiarity with oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and general electrical testing equipment.
  • Experience with machine learning and high-performance computing.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++, Fortran, Python, MATLAB, and assembly.
  • Experience in programming microcontrollers using dedicated development environments.

Work Environment

Candidates should be prepared to conduct fieldwork, including research activities on vessels.
