The County of Sonoma Probation Department is seeking a Senior Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Minimum of six (6) months of experience in youth counseling or related fields involving case management for at-risk youth; and
  • At least one (1) year of full-time experience in a role comparable to Juvenile Correctional Counselor II; and
  • A passing score on the California Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) Selection Examination for relevant classifications.

Role Responsibilities

As a Senior Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor, you will take on a leadership role, overseeing the activities of youth in detention facilities and collaborating with various stakeholders, including staff and health services. Your primary duties will include ensuring the safety and security of the facility while providing care and guidance to residents. Key responsibilities include:
  • Facilitating programming activities and developing relevant curricula for youth.
  • Utilizing de-escalation techniques and, when necessary, implementing use of force.
  • Conducting intensive casework and formulating short-term case plans for residents.
  • Collaborating with team members to address resident issues and enforce accountability.
  • Documenting resident behavior and maintaining accurate records in justice system databases.
The ideal candidate will be a skilled problem-solver with a strong background in evidence-based practices and cultural competency. Essential qualities include:
  • Strong communication and technical writing abilities.
  • Empathy, patience, and the capacity to build rapport with youth.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • A commitment to helping others and the belief in the potential for positive change.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: A combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills. Typically, this includes completion of twelve semester units at an accredited college in relevant fields such as criminology, sociology, or psychology, along with six months of youth counseling experience and one year in a related role with the County of Sonoma. Additional Requirements: Candidates must meet the following minimum standards: U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status, no felony convictions, and a passing score on the relevant written examination prior to appointment. Selected candidates must be willing to undergo a thorough background investigation, including psychological evaluation and medical examination. License: A valid California driver's license may be required depending on the assignment. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of: recreational activities for youth; laws and procedures related to youth detention; child abuse reporting laws; advanced first-aid techniques; and personal hygiene instruction. Knowledge of: sociology and psychology as they relate to youth development; counseling methods; behavior modification techniques; and departmental policies. Ability to: coordinate and lead activities; evaluate behavior and performance; apply effective group dynamics; maintain respect and control in various situations; and establish effective working relationships with diverse individuals and groups. BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
