The County of Sonoma Probation Department is seeking a Senior Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor.

Role Responsibilities

As a Senior Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor, you will take on a leadership role, overseeing the activities of youth in Juvenile Hall and Probation Camp. Your responsibilities will include ensuring the safety and security of the facility while providing guidance and support to residents. You will implement cognitive behavioral interventions and utilize motivational interviewing techniques, along with other evidence-based practices, to mentor and counsel youth. Key duties include:
  • Facilitating programming activities and developing related educational materials.
  • Applying de-escalation techniques and, when necessary, engaging in appropriate use of force.
  • Conducting intensive casework and formulating short-term case plans for residents.
  • Collaborating with team members to address resident issues and enforce accountability through established management systems.
  • Documenting resident behavior and entering necessary data into relevant databases.
The ideal candidate will be a skilled problem-solver with a strong background in evidence-based practices and experience working with diverse populations. Essential qualities include:
  • Strong communication and technical writing abilities.
  • Empathy, patience, and the capability to build rapport with youth.

This recruitment aims to fill a full-time Senior Juvenile Rehabilitation Counselor position in the Probation Department. Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: A combination of education, training, and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills. Typically, this includes completion of twelve semester units at an accredited college in fields such as criminology, child development, sociology, or related areas, along with six months of experience in youth counseling and one year of full-time experience in a comparable role with the County of Sonoma. Additional Requirements: Candidates must meet the following standards: U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status eligible for citizenship; no felony convictions or current probation; and a passing score on the relevant examination prior to appointment. Successful candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation, including psychological evaluation, fingerprinting, and medical examination. License: A valid California driver's license may be required depending on job responsibilities. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of: recreational activities for youth; laws and procedures related to youth detention; child abuse reporting laws; first-aid techniques; and personal hygiene instruction methods. Knowledge of: sociology and psychology related to child development, behavior patterns, and group dynamics; counseling methods in juvenile settings; and behavior modification techniques. Ability to: coordinate and lead youth activities; evaluate behavior and performance; apply effective group dynamics; supervise youth during various activities; maintain respect and control; relate to diverse individuals; establish effective working relationships; exercise good judgment in emergencies; and apply first aid as needed.
