Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Clinical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at Excela Health. As a Senior Clinical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of laboratory testing and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare clinical specimens for testing and analysis
  • Verify patient specimen identification and laboratory orders
  • Accession patient specimens and orders accurately and completely
  • Label specimens according to departmental policy
  • Prepare and process laboratory specimens appropriately
  • Organize specimens for processing and prioritize work to achieve best specimen quality and highest throughput
  • Identify, document, and refer variances from normal operation to appropriate staff
  • Plan and utilize time effectively to maintain optimal testing turnaround time
  • Use time to departmental advantage by filling in with office work, assisting technical staff, and performing general housekeeping duties
  • Coordinate work consistently to achieve maximum productivity
  • Maintain operational readiness of work area to ensure continuity of operations
  • Organize records and reports to enable timely retrieval of information
  • Maintain inventory of supplies at appropriate levels and prepare reagents as needed
  • Facilitate distribution of supplies and information between hospital employees and physician offices
  • Assure work area is organized, stocked, and clean
  • Resolve minor problems with equipment and computer
  • Interact with various health care professionals to obtain or exchange information to expedite laboratory services
  • Handle telephone communications with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality
  • Establish a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with members of the laboratory department, nursing, and physician staff
  • Seek guidance or ask for assistance from appropriate personnel regarding unusual requests or problems
  • Effectively communicate and/or obtain documentation for continuity of workflow
  • Assist in development of processing protocols
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or higher level of education
  • Experience in a specimen receiving position or experience as a phlebotomist and experience as a lab assistant
  • Experience handling patient specimens
  • College or technical school experience with laboratory specimens or core course completion in a biological science or related field
  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice
  • Basic math and keyboard proficiency
  • Basic working knowledge of computers and office equipment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience as a lab assistant
  • Experience in laboratory specimen procurement and receiving position or enrolled in an appropriate clinical laboratory program
Work Environment

Effective March 2020 or during pandemic: goggles, face shield, and mask are required according to CDC guidelines

When lift requirement is in excess of 50#, lift assistance (2 person) and/or transfer device is required
