Each year, we empower countless adults and children to transition from fear and abuse to safety and stability, transforming lives through a comprehensive suite of services. Our organization offers an array of wrap-around services designed to assist survivors in rebuilding their lives following trauma, while actively working to eradicate gender violence through three primary strategies: direct services, outreach and training, and systems-change advocacy. Our support is accessible across 11 locations throughout New York City.
Role Summary
The Senior Legal Counsel plays a pivotal role within Sanctuary for Families' Anti-Trafficking Initiative (ATI). This dedicated team comprises attorneys and case managers who collaboratively deliver holistic legal representation and case management to numerous survivors of human trafficking and related forms of gender-based violence. The Senior Legal Counsel will provide direct legal representation and oversee other attorneys assisting survivors with immigration, vacatur, and criminal justice issues. Additionally, this role involves educating various stakeholders—including the public, government entities, social services, legal professionals, healthcare providers, and law enforcement—about human trafficking and gender-based violence. Furthermore, the attorney will advocate for necessary legislative and policy reforms benefiting survivors.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate and provide legal representation for survivors of human trafficking and their eligible family members.
- Train, supervise, and mentor pro bono attorneys, staff attorneys, legal interns, law student fellows, and volunteers.
- Advocate for clients navigating diverse legal and social systems, including immigration, criminal justice, and public benefits.
- Collaborate with clinicians, attorneys, healthcare providers, and law enforcement agencies to secure optimal outcomes for clients.
- Represent Sanctuary for Families at community events and service provider gatherings relevant to Anti-Trafficking initiatives.
- Design and conduct training sessions to educate the public and other service providers on issues related to human trafficking and gender-based violence.
- Develop and implement targeted initiatives for client populations requiring specialized, culturally competent legal services and outreach.
- Work with Sanctuary's Data Team to compile, analyze, and deliver periodic progress reports to funding partners.
- Fulfill any additional departmental or agency-related duties or special projects as assigned by the Director of the Anti-Trafficking Initiative.
Qualifications
- Licensed to practice law in a U.S. state.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in immigration and/or criminal law, preferably within the public interest sector.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state laws relevant to human trafficking, particularly in immigration and criminal law.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, public speaking, and leadership capabilities.
- Excellent judgment and decision-making skills.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and a relevant community language (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin).
- Exceptional writing, research, and analytical abilities.
- Capacity to work independently and manage pressure effectively.
- Aptitude for motivating, inspiring, and managing staff.
- Deep understanding of and ability to engage with individuals from diverse national, ethnic, cultural, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- A passionate commitment to Sanctuary's mission of combating gender violence and human trafficking.
Compensation
Salary range: $82,000 - $96,500 annually, commensurate with relevant experience.
Employment Type
This is a full-time position (35 hours/week), classified as salaried/exempt.
Work Schedule
The current work schedule is hybrid; flexibility is required to meet job location obligations.
