The NYC Anti-Violence Project (AVP) is dedicated to creating a society where all individuals, particularly those from the LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities, can live free from violence and discrimination. AVP empowers these communities through education, advocacy, and support services.
Position Summary
AVP is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney to provide essential legal services to our clients. This role involves working closely with survivors of violence and advocating for their rights in various legal matters.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Services
- Offer legal consultations and provide referrals or guidance as necessary.
- Deliver comprehensive legal representation across diverse areas including family law, housing, immigration, public benefits, name changes, employment rights, and crime victim advocacy.
- Manage all aspects of client cases, including legal research, court preparation, and trial advocacy.
- Conduct training sessions and outreach initiatives for community members and professionals.
- Engage in collaborative efforts with other advocacy organizations to promote the rights of LGBTQ survivors.
- Facilitate holistic legal representation by coordinating with AVP's various departments and services.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Administrative Duties
- Adhere to AVP's internal policies and maintain organized case files.
- Accurately enter data into the Legal Department database in a timely manner.
- Meet all funding reporting requirements and assist with grant-related data collection.
- Maintain a valid legal license in New York and comply with all professional conduct standards.
Program Engagement
- Participate in regular supervision and departmental meetings.
- Contribute to AVP's anti-oppression initiatives and engage in relevant training opportunities.
- Attend external coalition meetings and support AVP's signature events.
Qualifications
- Legal license to practice in New York is required.
- Experience in public interest law, particularly in humanitarian immigration, family law, or housing, is preferred.
- Proven ability to work with diverse and low-income communities, especially those affected by violence.
- Fluency in Spanish or another language is a plus.
- Strong commitment to social justice and anti-oppression principles.
Compensation and Benefits
This full-time position offers a salary of $70,000, with additional compensation for multilingual capabilities. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance, along with a retirement investment plan and generous paid time off.
Work Environment
The role involves a 32-hour work week, typically from Monday to Thursday, with some flexibility for evening or weekend work as needed. The position supports a hybrid work model.
