Position Overview

The NYC Anti-Violence Project (AVP) aims to create a society where all individuals, particularly those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ), and those affected by HIV, can live without fear of violence and discrimination. AVP is dedicated to empowering these communities and their allies to combat violence through advocacy, education, and support services.

AVP is seeking a full-time Staff Attorney to provide comprehensive legal assistance to clients facing various challenges.

Duties and Responsibilities

Legal Services

  • Conduct legal consultations and offer appropriate guidance and referrals;
  • Deliver full legal representation across diverse legal issues, including family law, housing, immigration, public benefits, name changes, employment rights, and advocacy for crime victims;
  • Manage all aspects of client cases, including legal research, court filings, and preparation for court appearances;
  • Facilitate training sessions and outreach initiatives for community members and professionals;
  • Engage in collaborative efforts with other advocacy organizations to promote the rights of LGBTQ survivors;
  • Provide holistic legal support, coordinating with AVP's various departments to ensure comprehensive client care;
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all internal policies and procedures of the legal department and AVP;
  • Maintain organized and thorough case files;
  • Accurately enter data into the Legal Department database in a timely manner;
  • Meet all funding reporting requirements and assist with grant-related data collection;
  • Ensure compliance with the New York Rules of Professional Conduct.

Program-Related Duties

  • Participate in weekly supervision and departmental meetings;
  • Contribute to AVP's anti-oppression initiatives and actively promote equity within the organization;
  • Attend relevant training sessions and external coalition meetings;
  • Support AVP's signature events and initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Legal license to practice in New York State;
  • Experience in public interest law, particularly in humanitarian immigration, family law, or housing;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse, low-income communities, especially marginalized groups;
  • Fluency in Spanish or another language is preferred;
  • Commitment to social justice and anti-oppression principles.
Compensation and Benefits

Salary: This position offers a salary of $70,000, with an additional $1,500 for multilingual applicants.
