Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to fill the role of Associate Director of Environmental Health. This position is responsible for overseeing the Environmental Health Section, ensuring compliance with state and local regulations, and providing leadership to a team of environmental health professionals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct and evaluate staff responsible for enforcing sanitation and licensing requirements through scheduled inspections and complaint investigations.
  • Prepare and authorize work schedules and prioritize work assignments to meet the operational needs of the Environmental Health Section.
  • Monitor day-to-day work activities and assignments, coordinating with the Associate Director to respond to emergencies, inspection or complaint priorities, and other work situations requiring a rapid and effective response by staff.
  • Respond to and direct investigations of food-borne illnesses and sources of contamination in establishments involved in catastrophic occurrences.
  • Establish and enforce quality standards for the conduct of inspections and the issuance of violations for Public Health Code violations.
  • Monitor and review work performance and productivity of Environmental Health Program staff, administer disciplinary actions as required, and conduct informal performance evaluations.
  • Work with the Director in developing performance measures for the Environmental Health Program, monitor adherence to established goals and objectives, and prepare management reports.
  • Monitor the progress of violation cases under administrative hearing proceedings and ensure enforcement of resulting rulings.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of employee training and staff development programs, and conduct training seminars on sanitary procedures and issues.
  • Conduct site evaluations/inspections of property to assure that development complies with state and local regulations.
  • Conduct field inspections and interact with citizens, property and business owners, and contractors to resolve questions and/or problems.
  • Is assigned special projects or tasks that require above-average knowledge of rules and procedures.
Requirements
  • Must possess a Master's of Public Health degree or a related field and ten (10) or more years prior related work experience in public health services or a related field.
  • Must possess supervisory experience.
  • Must possess a Certification in Phase I & II Connecticut Sub-surface Sewage Disposal.
  • Must possess a Connecticut Certified Food Inspector certification.
  • Must possess a Certification as a Food Inspection Training Officer.
  • Must possess a Valid State of Connecticut driver's license.
