Job Summary
As a vital member of the transport team, you will be entrusted with the care of critically ill and injured patients. Your role involves delivering patient care while ensuring safety and operational efficiency. You will operate under the direct supervision of the Medical Control Physician, maintaining communication through radio contact or direct consultation. It is essential to uphold necessary certifications, skills, and ongoing education to ensure complete competency in your role. Additionally, you will be responsible for keeping transport vehicles in a state of readiness.
Essential Functions
- Conduct skills assessments promptly and accurately.
- Maintain a hygienic environment, including the base and transport vehicles, ensuring they are ready for missions. This includes checking, restocking, and cleaning at the start of each shift and as required throughout.
- Provide thorough and precise documentation of patient care, ensuring it accurately reflects assessments and interventions. Timely placement of charts in the patient's medical record is crucial, along with regular reviews with leadership.
- Deliver high-quality patient care and education in line with established policies and state regulations, as approved by the Medical Director and professional standards.
- Administer medications and IV solutions safely and in accordance with policy.
- Follow established guidelines and procedures independently when Medical Control is unavailable.
- Participate in additional activities such as public relations and marketing as needed.
- Adhere to safety protocols, ensuring that seat belts are utilized by all crew members and passengers.
- Be adaptable with vehicle assignments, understanding that these may change based on departmental needs.
- Drive in compliance with organizational policies and local/state regulations.
Physical Requirements
This role requires working, transporting, and driving in various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures and wet conditions. You must be free from any physical, emotional, or mental impairments that could hinder your ability to perform duties in a transport vehicle. The work environment may involve cramped spaces and moderate noise levels typical of emergency vehicles. Hearing protection is mandatory around active aircraft.
Handling patients with infectious diseases and exposure to unpleasant conditions is part of the job. You must be able to function effectively in high-stress situations, demonstrating critical thinking skills for rapid decision-making to ensure the safety of both crew and patients. Physical stamina is essential, as the role involves walking, standing, sitting, lifting, reaching, and pushing/pulling. Heavy lifting may require assistance from a partner.
Education, Experience, and Certifications
A high school diploma or GED is required, along with successful completion of an accredited EMT-Paramedic training program. Current NC EMT-P certification is mandatory. Preferred certifications include SC EMT-P and National Registry Paramedic at the time of hire, with both required within 90 days of employment. BCLS and ACLS certifications are required, while PALS, S.T.A.B.L.E., and NRP are preferred and must be obtained within 90 days of hire. An approved trauma certification is required within six months of employment. A valid driver's license (preferably NC/SC) with no more than six points is necessary, along with a minimum of two years of driving experience. Completion of an Atrium Health-approved driving course within 90 days of hire is also required. A minimum of one year of paramedic experience is essential, along with annual completion of safety briefings and survival training. You must possess a valid driver's license and meet insurability requirements for driving company vehicles. An operational smartphone for communication related to transport operations is required. A Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) approved specialty certification is necessary and must be maintained throughout employment. Recognized CAMTS specialty transport certifications are outlined in the current CAMTS Accreditation Standards.
