Job Overview

Position Summary

The Youth Support Specialist – Relief plays a crucial role in overseeing and guiding young individuals at The PLACE shelter. This position is designed to foster self-efficacy among youth while minimizing high-risk behaviors. The specialist is tasked with ensuring a secure and encouraging atmosphere, as well as facilitating various programs aimed at personal development.

Daily Responsibilities

In this role, the Youth Support Specialist will:

  • Supervise youth to ensure adherence to facility guidelines.
  • Provide crisis intervention for individuals experiencing distress.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization within the facility.
  • Assist in meal preparation and contribute to data collection efforts to keep records current.

Success in this position requires a trauma-informed approach, prioritizing the emotional and physical safety of both staff and youth during all interactions.

Work Schedule

Relief staff have the flexibility to select shifts as they become available, predominantly on weekends. Shift lengths vary, with most being approximately 8 hours. The PLACE shelter operates around the clock, offering both day and night shifts.

Compensation and Benefits

The starting pay for this position is $18.25 per hour, and it includes sick leave benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least two years of college education or a high school diploma/equivalent with one year of experience in the human services sector.
  • QMAP certification or eligibility for certification.
  • Successful completion of federal and state background checks.

  • Able to effectively engage with a diverse youth population while establishing clear boundaries.
  • Understanding of the common challenges faced by homeless adolescents, including mental health and substance abuse issues.
