The Peer Support Specialist is tasked with spearheading the peer support initiative and orchestrating health promotion strategies that align with LCMC Health's overarching mission. This position provides both individual and group assistance to healthcare professionals, including physicians and nursing staff, who are facing challenges related to workplace incidents and stressors associated with patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Leadership:
    - Directs the volunteer peer support network, including medical staff and ancillary personnel. Actively recruits additional support members to facilitate program growth.
    - Selects, trains, and orients new peer supporters, ensuring a comprehensive onboarding experience.
    - Assesses cases and coordinates the pairing of peer supporters with affected staff, guaranteeing appropriate support is provided. Offers guidance to peer supporters managing complex situations.
    - Delivers group psychological first aid and immediate support following significant events impacting entire teams (e.g., Critical Incident Stress Management, CISM).
    - Manages operational processes, including the creation of promotional materials, maintaining online educational resources, overseeing budgetary allocations, and organizing events.
  • Educational Outreach:
    - Acts as a subject matter expert, providing training to management and senior leadership on effective responses to secondary trauma and workplace stress.
    - Increases awareness of the second victim phenomenon and the peer support program through educational initiatives directed at frontline leadership and staff.
    - Leads peer supporter meetings, developing new training content to enhance the skills and confidence of peer supporters.
  • Case Coordination:
    - Oversees cases referred by peer supporters, facilitating warm handoffs to community mental health professionals. Serves as a resource to ensure access to behavioral health services and maintains partnerships with local providers.
    - Offers consultative support to staff seeking appropriate behavioral health referrals.
    - Collaborates with various departments to identify opportunities for peer support outreach.
  • Collaborative Engagement:
    - Consults with organizations looking to establish or enhance peer support programs.
    - Serves as a key member of the well-being team, promoting wellness education throughout the organization.
    - Represents LCMC Health at regional and national conferences, sharing best practices and strategies.
  • Program Development:
    - Leads strategic initiatives for the peer support program, collaborating with organizational leaders to align resources and foster cooperation among stakeholders.
  • Marketing and Communication:
    - Develops and implements outreach strategies for the peer support program and wellness center in collaboration with colleagues.
    - Maintains an active social media presence and updates program content on the relevant website.

Qualifications

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years in the health and wellness sector, with experience in managing corporate health promotion programs and project oversight.
  • Background in psychology, social work, counseling, or a related health field is preferred, with experience in a hospital environment being advantageous.
  • Preferred credentials include LCSW or LPC.
  • Experience in Trauma-Informed Care is essential.

Education:

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Psychology, Social Work, or a related discipline.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Certification details to be provided by LCMC Health.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Exceptional public speaking and presentation capabilities.
  • Ability to leverage data for strategic decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with a capacity for empathy and relationship-building across various roles.
  • Proficient in training others in trauma-informed approaches, including psychological first aid and peer support.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention methodologies.
  • Strong influencing and coaching abilities.
  • Capacity to maintain confidentiality and manage multiple projects effectively.
