Fort Belvoir VA United States Army National Guard Full time
Job Overview

As a Fire Support Specialist in the Army National Guard, you will be an integral member of a specialized artillery team. Your primary role will involve providing critical intelligence to support infantry and armored units during combat missions while acquiring valuable skills that will benefit your civilian career.

Role Responsibilities

Also referred to as the Forward Observer, Fire Support Specialists serve as the eyes for artillery units, focusing on target identification and communication with artillery teams across various levels. In this position, you will enhance your communication skills by:
  • Establishing and maintaining communication systems
  • Operating laser range finders
  • Encoding and decoding tactical messages
  • Assisting in the preparation and dissemination of fire support plans
  • Determining target locations through both manual calculations and computer systems

As you gain experience, your responsibilities will expand to include supervising and training fellow Soldiers, preparing target lists, initiating suppressive fire, and selecting observation posts.

Essential Skills

To excel in this role, candidates should possess:
  • Physical and mental resilience to perform under pressure
  • Strong multitasking abilities

The expertise you develop as a Fire Support Specialist can lead to a fulfilling civilian career in fields such as information technology, computer consulting, or data management.

Compensation and Training

Instead of incurring costs for training, you will earn a salary while you learn. In the Army National Guard, you will receive compensation while acquiring these essential skills.

Following 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you will learn fundamental military skills, you will undergo six weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT). This training will combine practical exercises and classroom instruction, covering target location computation, ammunition handling, system operations, and artillery tactics.
