As a Fire Support Specialist in the Army National Guard, you will play a crucial role in an elite artillery unit. Key Responsibilities

In the capacity of a Forward Observer, you will serve as the eyes of the artillery team, focusing on target acquisition and communication with artillery units across various levels. Your duties will include:
  • Operating and maintaining communication equipment
  • Utilizing laser range finders for accurate targeting
  • Encoding and decoding critical messages
  • Assisting in the preparation and distribution of fire support plans
  • Calculating target locations using both manual methods and computer systems

As you advance in your role, you will take on additional responsibilities such as supervising and training fellow Soldiers, preparing observer target lists, initiating suppressive fire, and selecting observation posts.

Compensation and Training

Rather than incurring costs for training, you will receive a paycheck while you learn. The Army National Guard provides you with the opportunity to acquire these essential skills while earning a regular income and qualifying for tuition assistance.

Following 10 weeks of Basic Training, you will engage in six weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), which combines hands-on experience with classroom instruction. This training will cover critical areas such as target location computation, ammunition handling, system operations, and artillery tactics.

Requirements
