Position Overview

As a Fire Support Specialist in the Army National Guard, you will play a crucial role in a specialized field artillery unit. Your primary responsibility will be to gather and relay vital intelligence to support infantry and armored units during combat missions. This position offers the opportunity to acquire valuable skills that are highly regarded in civilian careers.

Key Responsibilities

Known as the Forward Observer, you will serve as the eyes of the artillery unit, focusing on target acquisition and communication with artillery teams at various levels. Your duties will include:
  • Operating and maintaining communication equipment
  • Utilizing laser range finders for accurate targeting
  • Encoding and decoding critical messages
  • Assisting in the preparation and dissemination of fire support plans
  • Calculating target locations using both manual methods and computer systems

As you gain experience, you will take on additional responsibilities, including supervising and training fellow Soldiers, preparing observer target lists, initiating suppressive fire, and selecting observation posts.

Compensation and Training

Instead of incurring costs for training, you will earn a salary while you learn. In the Army National Guard, you will receive hands-on training and earn a regular paycheck, along with eligibility for tuition assistance.

After completing 10 weeks of Basic Training, you will undergo six weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT), which combines practical and classroom instruction. You will learn how to accurately compute target locations, handle ammunition safely, operate systems, and apply artillery tactics effectively.
