Lead Fire Protection Engineer for Critical Infrastructure

The Senior Fire Protection Engineer will spearhead the design initiatives on multi-disciplinary projects and oversee the creation of thorough fire protection documentation, which encompasses fire suppression, alarm systems, smoke control, and life safety measures. This role involves conducting assessments for both new and existing life safety protocols, managing the construction oversight process, and visiting client locations as required. The Senior Fire Protection Engineer will also play a key role in expanding the fire protection engineering team within the Baltimore metropolitan area.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct the design, specification, and coordination of various fire protection systems, including wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, deluge, and foam/water suppression systems. This includes overseeing fire water supply infrastructure such as storage tanks, pumps, and distribution piping.
  • Conduct and lead the development of fire protection calculations, including hydraulic analyses of water supply and demand, battery assessments, and voltage drop evaluations.
  • Assess and guide the interpretation of building and life safety regulations, including limitations on building area and height, construction types, fire-resistive assemblies, occupancy classifications, and smoke management systems.
  • Manage construction administration tasks, collaborating with field personnel to address design-related installation challenges, reviewing contractor submissions, conducting field inspections, and testing fire protection systems.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations to clients.
  • Establish and nurture effective relationships with existing clients, contractors, and stakeholders while identifying new business opportunities.
  • Oversee sales and marketing initiatives, pinpointing key pursuits for business growth.
  • Ensure that revenue and customer satisfaction objectives are achieved.
  • Supervise the development of cost proposals and qualifications to meet financial performance targets, including presenting project budgets and estimates.
  • Monitor project performance metrics.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the department.
  • Ensure adherence to quality assurance and quality control processes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in fire protection engineering or a related engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant design experience (a completed master's degree in fire protection engineering may substitute for one year of experience).
  • Master's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering with 6 years of relevant experience is required.
  • Expertise in standard engineering methodologies and practices.
  • In-depth knowledge of building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards, FM Global datasheets, military standards, and API guidelines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven critical thinking abilities, with a methodical and analytical approach to problem-solving.
  • Capability to lead project and discipline design teams effectively.
  • Advanced proficiency in design tools such as hydraulic calculation software, AutoCAD or Revit, Excel, and Word.
  • Must possess the ability to obtain and maintain access authorization to sensitive facilities and data.
  • Experience with military standards is highly preferred.
  • A Professional Fire Protection Engineer (P.E.) license is required.
  • NICET certification in Water-Based System Layout, Fire Alarm Systems, or Special Hazard Systems is preferred.
