Columbus, Ohio, United States AKP Recruiting Full time

The Senior Fire Protection Engineer will spearhead the design initiatives on multi-disciplinary projects and oversee the creation of detailed fire protection documentation, encompassing fire suppression, alarm systems, smoke control, and life safety measures. This role includes evaluating existing and new life safety programs, managing the construction administration process, and conducting site visits as required. The Senior Fire Protection Engineer will play a pivotal role in expanding the fire protection engineering team within the Baltimore metropolitan region.

Key Responsibilities
  • Direct the design, specification, and coordination of various fire protection systems, including wet-pipe, dry-pipe, pre-action, deluge, and foam/water suppression systems. This also includes the infrastructure for fire water supply, such as storage tanks, pumps, and distribution piping.
  • Assess and lead the development of fire protection calculations, including hydraulic analyses of water supply and demand, battery assessments, and voltage drop evaluations.
  • Oversee the evaluation of building and life safety requirements, considering factors such as area and height limitations, construction types, fire-resistive assemblies, occupancy classifications, hazards, egress, and smoke management systems.
  • Manage construction administration tasks, coordinating with field personnel to address design-related installation challenges, reviewing contractor submissions, conducting field inspections, and testing fire protection systems.
  • Prepare and deliver technical reports and presentations to clients.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with existing clients, contractors, and customers while identifying new business opportunities.
  • Lead sales and marketing initiatives, pinpointing key pursuits.
  • Ensure that revenue and customer satisfaction targets are achieved.
  • Oversee the preparation of cost proposals and qualification statements to meet financial performance standards, including presenting project budgets and estimates.
  • Monitor project performance metrics.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to the department.
  • Ensure adherence to QA/QC processes.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in fire protection engineering or a related field from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant design experience (a completed master’s degree in fire protection engineering may substitute for one year of experience).
  • Master's Degree in Fire Protection Engineering with 6 years of experience in the field is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of standard engineering practices and procedures.
  • Comprehensive understanding of building codes, fire codes, NFPA standards, FM Global datasheets, military standards, and API guidelines.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven critical thinking abilities and a methodical approach to problem-solving in quantitative environments.
  • Ability to lead design teams effectively.
  • Proficient in design tools such as hydraulic calculation software, AutoCAD or Revit, Excel, and Word. The position requires a skilled individual capable of resolving complex challenges through adaptation of standard techniques.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain access authorization to sensitive facilities and data.
  • Experience with military standards is highly desirable.
  • A Professional Fire Protection Engineer (P.E.) license is mandatory.
  • Preferred NICET certifications in Water-Based System Layout, Fire Alarm Systems, or Special Hazard Systems.
