Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Vehicle Mechanic - Extended to join our team. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for performing journey-level mechanical work on our diesel, gas, and electric-powered vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicles and equipment to support various District operations, including police, fire, and farm operations.
  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair fuel, ignition, electrical, and cooling systems, as well as power transmission systems.
  • Repair and adjust front-end and chassis components, steering mechanisms, and other controls.
  • Inspect, service, and repair vehicle braking systems.
  • Repair vehicle body and chassis parts using power tools and welding equipment.
  • Perform safety inspections on all vehicles in the shop/field and on the road.
  • Service, diagnose, and repair vehicle air conditioning systems.
  • Read electrical diagrams and utilize electrical and computer diagnostic equipment to identify engine problems or performance issues.
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicle air brakes, hydraulic systems, and associated power takeoff equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance work on farm and construction equipment, trucks, automobiles, carts, forklifts, fire engines, and other heavy and light equipment.
  • Read and interpret manuals, blueprints, drawings, and specifications.
  • Estimate labor, material, and equipment required to complete assignments.
  • Modify and fabricate metal parts for truck bodies and similar equipment.
  • Create and maintain electronic service and repair records for all assigned vehicles/equipment.
  • Repair electric vehicles and chargers, and troubleshoot electric motors and controllers.
Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, completion of an automotive technology instructional program, and journey-level work experience in all phases of vehicle maintenance and repair work.
  • A valid Class A California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program.

The employee may be required to travel to locations other than assigned work site and to adjust to work schedule changes and requirements to work overtime.
