Job Summary:

The Nursing Assistant I plays a vital role in providing high-quality patient care at UNC Health Care. As a member of our team, you will perform basic nursing skills, personal care activities, and other tasks as delegated by and under the supervision of the RN/LPN. This position requires a strong commitment to delivering exceptional patient care and promoting a safe, clean, and orderly environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Measure and record vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and other essential metrics.
  • Provide personal care, such as bathing, mouth care, skin care, hair care, nail care, bed making, and dressing/undressing.
  • Assist with nutritional needs by preparing patients for mealtime and feeding patients when necessary.
  • Support patients with elimination needs through tasks such as using bedpans/urinals, bowel/bladder training, collecting specimens, and perineal/catheter care.
  • Measure height and weight, and record intake and output.
  • Accurately document patient care as provided and according to unit-specific standards.
  • Promote effective communication between patients, teammates, physicians, and visitors.
  • Report abnormal vital signs and changes in the patient's condition to the primary nurse or charge nurse.
  • Communicate pertinent patient information during handoff report to other teammates.
  • Communicate patient or family questions or concerns in a timely manner.
  • Ensure teamwork by demonstrating cooperative, constructive, and problem-solving interactions.
  • Accept delegated tasks and assignments within their scope of practice.
  • Seek help when needed and provide assistance to others when available.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and orderly environment for self, patients, and teammates.
  • Utilize proper body mechanics when turning/repositioning, transferring, assisting with ambulation, range of motion exercises, and using lifts, beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs.
  • Follow proper infection control techniques, including handwashing, isolation techniques, and standard precautions.
  • Respond appropriately and promptly in emergency situations.
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of distress and promptly notify appropriate personnel.
  • Obtain needed supplies/equipment in a timely manner.
  • Participate in CPR or other needed emergency care within their scope of practice.
  • Provide assistance and customer service to patients and visitors.
  • Strive to develop rapport and trust with patients and visitors.
  • Adhere to behavior expectations and utilize Carolina Care techniques.
  • Provide blameless apology and work toward resolution of patient/visitor concerns.

Requirements:

  • Completion of state-approved Level I Nurse Aide training and competency evaluation program or its equivalent.
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Current listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I registry.
  • Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • At least one year in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Ability to provide excellent patient and customer care to all patients and their visitors as well as internal and external teammates.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Able to learn new software rapidly. Knowledge of Epic/EMR is helpful.

Valid NC Driver's License: No

If driving a Wayne UNC Vehicle, must be 21 years old and MVR must be approved by Risk Management.
