Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Nursing Assistant I to join our team at UNC Health Care. As a Nursing Assistant I, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and supporting our healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Provide basic nursing skills, personal care activities, and other tasks as delegated by and under the supervision of the RN/LPN.
  2. Measure vital signs, including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, etc.
  3. Provide personal care, such as bathing, mouth care, skin care, hair care, nail care, bed making, and dressing/undressing.
  4. Assist with nutritional needs of patients by preparing them for meal time and feeding them when needed.
  5. Assist patients with elimination needs through tasks such as using a bedpan/urinal, bowel/bladder training, collecting specimens, and perineal/catheter care.
  6. Measure height and weight, and record intake and output.
  7. Accurately document patient care as provided and according to unit-specific standards.
  8. Promote effective communication between patients, teammates, physicians, and visitors.
  9. Report abnormal vital signs and changes in the patient's condition to the primary nurse or charge nurse.
  10. Communicate pertinent patient information during handoff report to other teammates.
  11. Communicate patient or family questions or concerns in a timely manner.
  12. Ensure teamwork by demonstrating cooperative, constructive, and problem-solving interactions.
  13. Accept delegated tasks and assignments that are within your scope of practice.
  14. Seek help when needed and provide help to others when available.
  15. Ensure a safe, clean, and orderly environment for yourself, patients, and teammates.
  16. Utilize proper body mechanics when turning/repositioning, transferring, assisting with ambulation, range of motion exercises, and using lifts, beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs.
  17. Ensure patient safety through utilizing items such as side rails, call bells, and mitts/restraints.
  18. Follow proper infection control techniques, including handwashing, isolation techniques, and standard precautions.
  19. Respond appropriately and promptly in emergency situations.
  20. Recognize signs and symptoms of distress and promptly notify appropriate personnel.
  21. Obtain needed supplies/equipment in a timely manner.
  22. Participate in CPR or other needed emergency care within your scope of practice.
  23. Provide assistance and customer service to patients and visitors.
Requirements
  • Completion of state-approved Level I Nurse Aide training and competency evaluation program or its equivalent.
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Current listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I registry.
  • Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
  • At least one year of experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to provide excellent patient and customer care to all patients and their visitors, as well as internal and external teammates.
  • Ability to speak, read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Able to learn new software rapidly. Knowledge of Epic/EMR is helpful.
