Unit Mission: Our objective is to deliver exceptional and cost-efficient pathology services that align with the patient care, educational, and research goals of the Commonwealth of Virginia's healthcare system.

Key Purpose of the Role: The Department of Pathology is in search of a full-time Assistant or Associate Professor (dependent on qualifications) specializing in clinical pathology and transfusion medicine.

Role Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:
Act as the Associate Medical Director of Transfusion Medicine, and potentially the Associate Director or Director of Apheresis, based on experience. Provide medical oversight for blood bank-related clinical services as required. Ensure compliance with all medical, technical, and regulatory processes, including quality assurance measures.

Encourage the safe and effective use of blood transfusion components and services across the medical facility, collaborating closely with specialists in hematology, oncology, stem cell transplantation, neurology, obstetrics, and trauma surgery.


Service Engagement:
Engage in departmental, institutional, and national committees as necessary.

Educational Contributions:

Involve in the educational initiatives of Transfusion Medicine, which include: (1) delivering didactic presentations, conducting rounds, and leading seminars for residents, medical and graduate students, as well as dental and allied health students; (2) providing continuing education for faculty, nursing staff, allied health professionals, and community physicians; and (3) developing workshops at local, state, and national levels.


Research Involvement:

Contribute to scholarly activities through presentations at national conferences, fostering clinical research partnerships, publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and engaging with relevant professional organizations.


  • The faculty member will collaborate closely with the Division Chair to advance the mission and vision of the Department of Pathology.
Required Qualifications:

  • MD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree
  • Board certification by the American Board of Pathology in combined Anatomic and Clinical Pathology or Clinical Pathology, or board certification in adult or pediatric Hematology/Oncology
  • Board certification or eligibility in Transfusion Medicine
  • Interest or experience in laboratory management
  • A demonstrated record of scholarly publication in books and peer-reviewed journals
  • Full, unrestricted medical licensure in Virginia
  • Experience in promoting a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member.
