Position: Power Systems Forecaster I
This position is focused on the development of forecasts for power systems related to renewable energy resources. The Power Systems Forecaster plays a crucial role in predicting, monitoring, and assessing renewable energy outputs while also managing the integration of new variable energy resources into the forecasting framework. This role provides expertise and guidance to enhance and support all necessary data and modeling efforts aimed at continuously improving renewable resource forecasting. The forecaster analyzes Numerical Weather Prediction Models and translates forecasted data into actionable insights for daily renewable energy forecasting needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor and forecast renewable energy resources within the energy system.
- Organize and maintain databases containing historical real-time, hourly, and daily weather data, renewable resource information, generator outages, and other relevant data.
- Create, manage, and analyze databases to optimize renewable forecasting processes.
- Identify inefficiencies in existing procedures and propose enhancements.
- Formulate hypotheses to improve the accuracy of renewable forecasts and collaborate with colleagues to develop plans for enhancing solar forecasts and other energy models using statistical and algorithmic techniques.
- Develop and implement new analytical tools and interfaces through programming.
- Utilize software to refine solar prediction models and analyze the outcomes to validate or challenge forecasting hypotheses.
- Enhance the accuracy of daily solar forecasts.
- Provide meteorological insights and forecasting support to internal teams as needed.
- Offer technical expertise on onboarding and validating variable energy resources to ensure accurate and timely short-term solar forecasts for market operations.
- Flexibility to work weekends and non-standard hours as required.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Economics, Data Science, Atmospheric Science/Meteorology, Engineering, or a closely related field is required (preferably in Atmospheric Science/Meteorology).
- While this is an entry-level position, any relevant pre or post-graduate experience will be considered advantageous.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, and probability.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team setting.
- Excellent analytical, verbal, and written communication skills, with a keen attention to detail.
- Proficient in pattern recognition, deductive reasoning, and analytical thinking, demonstrating sound judgment and decision-making capabilities.
- Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills are essential.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently in a dynamic corporate environment under pressure to meet tight forecasting deadlines.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as SQL/Oracle, R-Studio, Python, VBA, or similar is preferred.
- Strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities are necessary.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and PowerBI, with skills in data retrieval and manipulation across various database formats.
