Position Overview
The Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) plays a crucial role in providing academic support within the university environment. This position involves working autonomously while demonstrating sound judgment and discretion. Responsibilities may include supervising students, evaluating academic submissions, organizing schedules, and facilitating communication among faculty and students. The GSA is expected to work a maximum of 20 hours per week during their contracted period.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with the Dean, Department Chair, or assigned Professor to fulfill academic duties.
- Attend all essential departmental events and Graduate School functions.
- Participate in orientations and training sessions as directed.
- Adhere to the Community Standards and Honor Code as outlined by the Office of Community Life, alongside the Graduate Assistantship Handbook.
- Develop and modify PowerPoint, Excel, and Word documents as needed.
- Monitor attendance through designated platforms and update records accordingly.
- Supervise examinations, ensuring academic integrity and addressing student inquiries.
- Evaluate quizzes, tests, and written assignments within the specified timeframes.
- Communicate effectively with students regarding attendance and course-related inquiries, ensuring timely responses.
- Manage documentation for excused absences and coordinate accommodations for students with disabilities.
- Maintain regular office hours to facilitate student interactions, both in-person and virtually.
- Assist with various administrative tasks and projects as assigned.
- Uphold Liberty University policies and represent the institution positively.
- Collaborate effectively as a team member, supporting the mission of Liberty University.
SUPERVISORY ROLE
Graduate Assistant Supervisors are responsible for adhering to the Graduate Assistantship Handbook and overseeing the Graduate Assistant's performance within their departments. This includes monitoring the academic and professional development of the Graduate Assistant and conducting evaluations at the end of each semester.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) from an accredited institution.
- Minimum Requirement: Acceptance into or enrollment in a master's or doctoral program by the start date.
- Preferred: Enrollment in a master's or doctoral program with prior teaching experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to understand and utilize technical systems relevant to the GSA role.
- Local residency is required for on-campus reporting.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS
Communication
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for clear information dissemination.
- Proficiency in English for effective correspondence.
- Public communication skills for professional representation of Liberty University.
- Excellent organizational and scheduling abilities.
Problem Solving
- Ability to analyze information and apply judgment to resolve routine and complex issues.
Physical Requirements
- Capability to travel to various campus locations.
- Ability to perform desk work and use a keyboard.
- Regularly required to communicate orally and engage in physical activities on campus.
- Ability to lift up to 10 pounds as necessary.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The position typically operates in a climate-controlled environment with moderate noise levels. Occasional outdoor events may be part of the responsibilities.
Driving Requirements
Use of personal or university vehicles may be necessary for job-related travel. A valid driver's license and proof of insurance are required.
