Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Laboratory Manager to join our team at Emory University. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising research personnel, participating in project planning, and developing, implementing, and evaluating research protocols, techniques, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise staff by orienting, training, and providing performance feedback.
  • Provide expertise and training in methodology, basic laboratory procedures, and equipment operation.
  • Prepare and monitor research-related budgets.
  • Assist in developing and submitting grant proposals and in monitoring grant expenditures.
  • Advise principal investigator of changes in reporting or accounting requirements and assist researchers in meeting requirements.
  • Develop models for patents, licensing, and manufacturing agreements with researchers.
  • Monitor and enforce contracts and monetary returns for products developed through research.
  • Perform a wide range of laboratory tests, specimen preparation, and experimental procedures for routine and specialized studies.
  • Select or develop effective research methodologies.
  • Collect and analyze results of studies and provide interpretation of results.
  • Co-author or author publications based on laboratory research and findings.
  • Recommend new equipment and supply purchases; investigate equipment malfunctions and schedule maintenance/repair.
  • Monitor quality control of media, reagents, and cleaning procedures and address any problems.
  • Keep abreast of safety procedures and monitor the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous substances.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related science field and four years of research experience, of which one year is in a supervisory role in a laboratory, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
  • Significant work experience in a bacteriology wet lab is strongly preferred.
  • Significant work experience in conventional and real-time PCR, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequence analysis is preferred.
  • Significant coursework including microbiology and molecular laboratory components preferred.
  • A postgraduate/master's degree or higher is preferred.
  • Effective team management, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, the ability to multi-task, remaining flexible, and managing time effectively.
  • Ability to perform a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.
