Position Overview
Under the direct oversight of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse II (LPN), the Patient Care Associate is responsible for delivering essential patient care by employing the Relationship-Based Care framework. This role is pivotal in enhancing patient outcomes through active participation in Shared Leadership, Evidence-Based Practice, and adherence to nursing excellence standards in clinical settings. By fostering therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and colleagues, the Patient Care Associate serves as a vital member of the interdisciplinary team, contributing to the fulfillment of unit and organizational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitates patient admission, transfer, or discharge as designated, assisting patients with daily living activities, effectively operating patient care equipment, and ensuring skin integrity and safety measures are upheld.
  • Records patient data in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), including vital signs, nursing interventions, and intake/output metrics.
  • Acts as an advocate for patients and families by providing comfort, assistance, and pertinent information, while relaying feedback to the RN or LPN regarding patient care and condition as instructed.
  • Exhibits a commitment to the values of the University of Illinois Chicago through collaboration and effective communication, aiming for quality outcomes, patient safety, customer satisfaction, and maintaining a clean, safe, and therapeutic environment.
  • Engages in organizational, departmental, and shared leadership initiatives; aligns daily actions with departmental and unit objectives.
  • Identifies recurring clinical issues and participates in the problem-solving process to reach resolutions.
  • Collaborates with colleagues to create and promote positive learning experiences for both staff and students.
  • Takes ownership of ongoing professional development by recognizing learning needs and implementing strategies to address them.
  • Facilitates therapeutic, informational, or task-oriented groups relevant to the role of a Patient Care Associate.
  • Performs tasks related to their departmental specialization.
  • Undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned.
  • Participates in special projects as required.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license from an accredited institution.
  • Registered and active in the relevant Health Care Work Registry.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR certification and any other unit-specific certifications.
  • Effective communication skills (both oral and written) that foster therapeutic relationships among patients, families, and healthcare providers.
  • Intermediate computer proficiency with the ability to master the Electronic Health Record (EHR) through on-the-job training.
  • Demonstrated excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and a solid work history.

Preferred Qualifications
One to two years of prior hospital experience is preferred. Experience in psychiatry is advantageous. CPI certification is to be obtained upon hiring.
