Engineering Technician Trainee

This entry-level engineering position involves learning and performing routine engineering tasks and assisting engineering staff or other professionals in engineering, statistical work, mathematical, contract and construction support, or various other utility-related tasks.
Key Responsibilities- Manages a service area with lower-level projects under supervision.
- Designs lighting applications, creates work orders, and inspects contractor work under supervision.
- Learns basic procedures of using Computer Aided Design Software to produce maps, drawings, charts, graphs, and related documents.
- Enters data into processing devices using procedures designated by engineers, planners, and others.
- Runs programs or executes procedures to obtain the necessary output in proper format.
- Learns to use various software applications to create presentations, collect data, calculate statistical averages, statistical trends, rates of change, and percentages, and plot technical data.
- Prepares cost estimates and invoices for customers.
- Prepares distribution design based on load data and customer needs.
- Performs field checks to verify that electrical conduit and hardware are installed per plans.
- Provides Development Review Team (DRT) comments for new projects.
- Must be able to attend meetings at locations other than primary work location.
- Ability to complete training on the job, college, classroom, and other training as required.
- Keeps an up-to-date project list to assist in load forecasting.
- Records Redline and lighting installations into GIS.
- Maintains the service engineering mailbox and voicemail.
- May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
- High school diploma from an accredited school or a GED.
- Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) college majors are preferred.
- Ability to perform basic research.
- Ability to understand, follow, and transmit oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform routine technical computations, make estimates, compile statistical information, and perform analysis.
- Ability to be a self-starter, self-motivated, detail-oriented, and team player and to carry out assignments independently and with minimal supervision.
- Ability to assist in testing programs.
- Ability to learn methods and procedures of cost estimates and evaluations against actual estimates.
- Ability to assist while learning to manage multiple projects and timelines simultaneously while remaining flexible as needed.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, consultants, other utilities, City employees, and the general public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with fellow employees and the general public through oral and written communication.
Requires manual labor that involves walking or standing some of the time, exerting up to 50 pounds of force regularly routine keyboard operations, and operating City vehicles.
Work may include fieldwork as required at various job sites as well as performing job duties in an office, water/wastewater plant, pump stations, pump houses, manholes, vaults, or an outside environment exposed to the elements and traffic.
The job risks exposure to extreme noise levels, dust, pollen, bright/dim light, extreme hot/cold, wet/humid conditions, fumes, noxious odors, chemicals, sewage, confined spaces, and heights.
The job requires normal visual acuity, field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
