Key Responsibilities:

The Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Specialist I plays a vital role in the planning, execution, and management of the Recreation Respite Program, along with various recreational activities and leisure services across different agency programs. Specific duties include:

  • Ensure exceptional opportunities for all families and participants enrolled in ACHIEVE's Recreation and Leisure Services.
  • Implement and facilitate scheduled recreation activities, as well as spontaneous programs as directed.
  • Encourage and support independent leisure activities among participants by providing necessary resources and materials.
  • Maintain proper storage and upkeep of all recreation equipment and supplies.
  • Lead recreation and leisure activities with participants.
  • Provide transportation for participants to various recreation and leisure events as required.
  • Aim to meet the standards set by the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).
  • Supervise and provide direct care to program participants.
  • Address and report any incidents, accidents, or situations that may negatively affect the health and safety of individuals receiving services.
  • Adhere to departmental and facility policies to ensure the cognitive, physical, psychological/emotional, social, and spiritual needs of participants are met.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Services and other specialists to fulfill the objectives of all recreation programs.
  • Participate in all required training, staff development programs, and meetings as mandated by the agency and relevant regulations.
Essential Qualifications:
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, along with effective time management and organizational abilities.
  • Availability to work scheduled hours, which may include overtime, weekends, and holidays, while maintaining acceptable attendance as per agency policy.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and software relevant to departmental needs.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment in both routine and emergency situations.
  • Physical capability to perform required tasks and lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Experience working with individuals with functional differences is preferred but not mandatory.
  • A valid driver's license that meets the agency's insurance requirements.
