Role Responsibilities

NIST collaborates with industry and scientific communities to foster innovation and enhance quality of life. We are seeking a Research Engineer to contribute to our initiatives in structural engineering focused on coastal hazards, including wind, storm surge, and flooding. The selected candidate will be responsible for:
  • Gathering and analyzing field data related to coastal hazards, particularly in the context of recent hurricane events, to formulate a detailed, multi-year research strategy aimed at bolstering the resilience of coastal communities.
  • Providing expert guidance in hydrodynamic modeling and computational fluid dynamics as they pertain to coastal and wind engineering, leading efforts to assess the risks associated with hurricanes and extreme wind events on infrastructure.
  • Conducting field data collection as necessary for ongoing and future research projects.
  • Sharing research findings through professional presentations and publications in reputable journals.
  • Representing NIST in professional communities focused on wind and coastal engineering.
  • Engaging in the development and revision of standards and codes to enhance the resilience of structures against wind and surge-related hazards.
Applicants should possess a solid foundation in wind and coastal engineering, with expertise in structural engineering, material mechanics, and statistical analysis being advantageous.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree in Engineering: Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in an accredited engineering program or have completed coursework in advanced engineering sciences.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Relevant education, training, or technical experience that demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles and practices. This may include professional registration or successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam.

In addition to the basic qualifications, candidates must have at least 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in federal service, particularly in hydrodynamic simulation and computational wind engineering.
