Job Summary

The J. Paul Getty Trust is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Curator of Antiquities to lead the curatorial team at the Getty Villa. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the presentation and interpretation of the Villa's collection of ancient art and antiquities, as well as coordinating international loan exhibitions and public programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise a team of curators and support staff, providing intellectual leadership and guidance on curatorial, exhibition, and research programs.
  • Oversee the display and interpretation of the antiquities collection in the Villa Galleries, ensuring its growth and development through purchases and gifts.
  • Represent the Getty Villa and its programs to global audiences, fostering collaborations with foreign governments and museums.
  • Lead the Villa Council, a group of supporters, and collaborate with the Department of Development to secure sponsors for exhibitions and programming.
  • Collaborate with Education, Publications, and other Museum departments to ensure public accessibility of the collections.
  • Administer the departmental operating budget of $1.1M.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. or equivalent qualification in archaeology or ancient art of the Mediterranean world.
  • Experience in curating exhibitions, supervising staff, and working effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • A network of international contacts within the museum and academic communities.
  • Knowledge of the antiquities market and a record of scholarly research, publication, and public presentation.
  • Preference given to candidates with a broad knowledge of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman art, and demonstrated interest in interconnections between the classical world and other cultures.
