Communicare is a community mental health organization dedicated to serving individuals across various counties in North Central Mississippi. Our mission focuses on providing specialized treatment for adults facing serious mental health challenges, children with emotional disturbances, individuals battling substance use disorders, and those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We are currently in search of three Recovery Support Advocates to join our team for overnight shifts and alternating weekends.

Key Responsibilities of a Recovery Support Advocate: This role involves delivering a range of recovery-focused services to individuals in a crisis stabilization environment, aimed at enhancing their independence, community integration, and recovery journey from mental health issues or substance use. The support provided by peers—who may be current or former consumers or family members—encompasses various forms of assistance, advocacy, and resources that empower clients to engage in ongoing treatment and achieve their personalized recovery goals.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Participate in all required training and meetings organized by Communicare and the Department of Mental Health.
  • Maintain certification as a Recovery Support Advocate.
  • Collaborate effectively with other mental health professionals.
  • Deliver peer support services tailored to the individual needs of clients.
  • Assist in orienting new clients to the services provided.
  • Support clients during transitions to enhance their access to resources and support systems.
  • Provide transportation for clients when necessary.
  • Facilitate improved communication between clients and service providers.
  • Enhance the team's understanding of lived experiences, recovery, and resilience by modeling self-advocacy, personal responsibility, and optimism.
  • Keep accurate records of services provided in client files.
  • Conduct home or community visits when beneficial for clients.
  • Accompany clients to appointments as required.
  • Offer crisis support by actively listening and collaborating with the treatment team.
  • Encourage clients to take an active role in their recovery journey.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or Program Coordinator/Director.

This position is anticipated to last for approximately 12 months.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1. High School Diploma or GED; or, for candidates aged 16-20, active enrollment in a school or GED program is required.
  • 2. Must possess reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, automobile insurance, and a safe driving record.
  • 3. Must identify as a current or former mental health consumer with a sustained period of self-directed recovery or as a first-degree family member of a former or current consumer.
  • 4. Ability to successfully complete required training provided by DMH and the Center.
