Job Overview

Position Summary

The North Cascades Institute is in search of a dedicated Facilities Maintenance Specialist to ensure the upkeep and operational efficiency of our eco-friendly facilities. As a vital member of our Operations Team, the Facilities Maintenance Specialist will be responsible for performing quality assessments, executing repairs, managing inventory, and adhering to preventative maintenance protocols. The ideal candidate will possess a broad skill set in maintenance, demonstrating a solid understanding of facility systems and tools. Exceptional problem-solving abilities, along with strong communication and organizational skills, are essential for success in this role. This position collaborates closely with staff, partners, and contractors to support a diverse range of educational initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance and Repairs

  • Conduct maintenance and repairs on buildings, equipment, and furnishings as required.
  • Assist with significant maintenance projects as needed.
  • Utilize hand, battery-operated, electric, gas, propane, and pneumatic tools.
  • Maintain the Maintenance Shop and Disposal Building, ensuring appropriate spare parts and tools are stocked.
  • Perform minor repairs on organizational vehicles and the rescue boat.
  • Support renovation and construction projects as assigned.
  • Keep supply closets organized, clean, and well-stocked.
  • Maintain service logs for all maintenance activities.
  • Report facility issues to supervisors promptly and address hazards encountered during duties.
  • Comply with infection-control policies as trained.
  • Conduct pest control measures as instructed.
  • Use and maintain equipment according to training.

Administrative Duties

  • Assist in training staff on the use of tools, equipment, and materials, emphasizing safety practices.
  • Contribute to maintenance log management, including the Green Slip System and general service logs.
  • Research and propose solutions for maintenance challenges.
  • Manage inventory of equipment, supplies, and parts as assigned, ordering materials as necessary.
  • Collaborate with contractors, volunteers, and service providers on-site.
  • Facilitate the transportation of facilities equipment and supplies.
  • Assist with housing inspections and related procedures.

Grounds Maintenance

  • Perform routine grounds maintenance, including weed removal, trail debris clearance, and pruning.
  • Remove hazardous trees as directed.

Cleaning and Housekeeping

  • Conduct regular cleaning of the facilities, including sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, and sanitizing.
  • Execute deep cleaning projects as assigned.
  • Manage laundry services for participant accommodations as required.

General Responsibilities

  • Operate Institute vehicles for maintenance tasks.
  • Participate as a member of the Rescue Boat Responder Team.
  • Engage in general staff responsibilities, including meetings and risk management.
  • Occasionally contribute to marketing and development initiatives.

Housing and Benefits

Subsidized housing options are available, with private rooms in shared houses often offered. In some instances, shared room arrangements may be necessary.

Compensation

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with a competitive pay rate based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include sick leave, vacation leave, holiday leave, and medical/dental insurance, among others.
