Summary of Position

North Cascades Institute (NCI) seeks a qualified Maintenance Technician (MT) to undertake the responsibility of preserving the good condition and functionality of our beautiful and earth-friendly facilities and premises. The MT is a member of our Operations Team and primary duties will include conducting quality assessments, completing repairs, maintaining inventory, and following preventative maintenance procedures. The ideal candidate will be a maintenance generalist, with a comprehensive knowledge of facilities systems and procedures, and basic tools and appliances. To excel in this position, you must be an outstanding problem-solver with exceptional communication and organizational skills. This position works closely with other staff, partners and contractors to support a wide array of educational programs. This position is based out of the Institute's field campus in North Cascades National Park at the Institute's Environmental Learning Center (ELC). The jobsite is in a remote National Park which can experience snow-covered roads, avalanches, wildfire, smoke, wild animals, and flooding. This is a regular, full time position supervised by the Operations Manager.


Responsibilities

Repair and Maintenance

  • Performs maintenance and repairs on buildings, equipment and furnishings as needed.
  • Assists with prescribed major maintenance.
  • Operates hand, battery, electric, gas, propane and pneumatic tools.
  • Upkeeps the Maintenance Shop and Disposal Building and its operations. Stock appropriate spare parts and tools.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on company vehicles and the rescue boat.
  • Assists with renovation, remodel and construction projects as assigned.
  • Maintains orderly, clean, and well-stocked supply closets.
  • Maintains service logs.
  • Promptly reports facility issues to supervisor and immediately mitigates hazards encountered in the course of duties.
  • Complies with infection-control policies as trained.
  • Performs pest control removal as trained.
  • Uses and maintains equipment properly as trained.

Administrative Tasks

  • Assists in training in use of tools, equipment and materials with an emphasis on work procedure methods and safety practices.
  • Contributes to maintenance log keeping, including but not limited to the Green Slip System, Major Maintenance hours and general service logs.
  • Research solutions to maintenance issues.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment, supplies and parts as assigned. Orders materials and supplies as requested.
  • Works directly with contractors, volunteers, Seattle City Light and Park Service when on site.
  • Completes the pickup and delivery of facilities equipment and supplies to campus.
  • Assists in housing inspections and procedures for staff housing units.

Grounds and Restoration

  • Performs routine grounds keeping: removing weeds, removing fallen debris from trails, prune, thin, and mulch as needed.
  • Removes hazard trees as assigned.

Housekeeping

  • Performs routine cleaning of the Learning Center's facilities. General tasks include but are not limited to; sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, sanitizing, organizing, and restocking.
  • Performs deep cleaning projects as assigned.
  • Gathers, washes, folds and distributes laundry for participant lodges and other accommodations as assigned.

General

  • Drives Institute vehicles for operations tasks.
  • Is a member of the Rescue Boat Responder Team.
  • Participates in general staff responsibilities such as staff meetings, hands to work, risk management, and hospitality and other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager.
  • Occasional participation in Marketing and Development projects: photography, blog posts, etc.


Housing

Subsidized housing available. Private rooms in shared houses are often available. In some cases, roommates in shared rooms may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Two years or more of proven experience in general maintenance work.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment with good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to accommodate a varied work schedule.
  • Ability to model safe work habits and follow risk management practices.
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks with exemplary time management skill and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to respond to on-call duties as assigned.
  • Ability to operate trucks and loaders with mounted snow plows or pushers in a safe and productive manner.
  • Strong IT skills, including computer skills and experience with spreadsheets, common software and Microsoft Office.
  • Reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Ability to work with diverse or underrepresented populations.
  • Valid driver's license and driving record check must have no more than one moving violation in the past three years, no DUI, reckless driving or serious moving violations, etc.
  • Final offers of employment are contingent upon the successful completion of a background check that may include employment history, national criminal background check, national sex offender registry search and a driving history check.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to operate a powerboat in a variety of weather conditions for water-based program support. Training is provided.
  • Current Washington State Boaters education card, or ability to acquire after one month of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic electrical, plumbing and/or carpentry.
  • Has the skills required to operate in avalanche terrain.


Benefits:

This is a regular, full-time, non-exempt position. The pay rate is $21.00-$24.00 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. This position is subject to a $1 increase for utilizing non-NCI housing. The job location for this position is at the Environmental Learning Center.

Benefits - We offer a competitive compensation package. Benefits include the following:

  • Sick Leave – 8 hours per month.
  • Vacation Leave – 10 days in year one. Positions with furloughs may accrue less than 10 days.
  • Holiday Leave – 12 days maximum per year.
  • Service Days – 2 days per year.
  • Other paid time-off such as family leave, pregnancy leave, bereavement leave, etc.
  • Medical/dental insurance, long and short-term disability insurance, tax-deferred annuity, and contribution retirement plan.
  • Ability to participate in Institute pro deals
  • Yearly stipend to participate in Institute programs.

Benefits are prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week.

This is a bargaining unit position represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, District Lodge 751. All terms and conditions of employment are subject to change in accordance with a collective bargaining agreement.
