Role Purpose:

This driving position aids and supports transportation management by supervising and guiding designated driver teams, typically at remote shuttle yard sites. Responsibilities may encompass managing work schedules, training, resolving customer delivery challenges, onboarding new hires, conducting safety inspections, and observing preferred work methods, among other related tasks. The Lead Driver operates a tractor-trailer or straight truck both intrastate and/or interstate on local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and/or overnight routes to deliver and unload various food and food-related items to clients. All routes must be completed safely, adhering to all company policies and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. The driver interacts and communicates with customers, vendors, and colleagues in a professional manner, ensuring all services and responsibilities are executed according to preferred work methods and customer service standards. Functions as a collaborative team member within the department and organization, as needed, and performs any assigned duties to best serve the company.

• Conduct all necessary safety inspections (i.e., pre/post trip) including evaluations of the tractor/truck and trailer in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations; ensure that the tractor/truck and trailer meet company safety criteria and take appropriate action as necessary. Report all safety concerns and/or required repairs.

• Adhere to all DOT regulations and company safe driving protocols. Promptly report any and all safety risks.

• Assist in the daily oversight of all assigned drivers to guarantee safe and timely delivery of all customer orders. Perform additional administrative tasks as assigned.

• Inspect trailers for properly loaded and secured freight. Conduct item count checks and verify customer invoices for loaded products. Accurately complete all required paperwork associated with freight in a clear and legible manner.

• Drive to and deliver customer orders according to a predetermined delivery schedule.

• Unload products from the trailer and transport items into designated customer storage areas. Conduct damage control checks on items, scan, and notify the supervisor about removing orders per company policy. Confirm delivery of items with the customer and obtain necessary signatures. Collect payments (cash or checks) where applicable. Load customer returns onto the trailer and secure trailer doors.

• Ensure that the tractor, trailer, and freight are properly locked and/or secured at all times.

• Unload damaged goods and customer returns and bring them to the driver check-in, completing necessary paperwork. Remove all equipment, materials, and trash from trailers as required.

• Maintain a daily record of hours of service and log them in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company regulations.

• Perform general housekeeping duties in the tractor, loading dock area, and keep trailers clear and clean as required. At the end of the shift, secure all equipment and complete all necessary paperwork.

Qualifications:

High School Diploma/GED or Equivalent Experience

Required Experience:
1 – 3 Years

• Minimum of 2 years commercial driving experience in foodservice distribution or a related field.

• Internal candidates must maintain good performance standing.

• Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.

• Valid CDL A license.

• Must be at least 21 years of age.

• Comply with all State licensing and/or certification requirements (where applicable).

• Clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for the past 3 years.

• Successfully pass pre-employment drug screening.

• Pass road test.

• Valid current DOT Health Card or ability to secure a new DOT Health Card.

• Capable of hand-lifting and utilizing two-wheeler, lift gate, and/or other equipment to move and/or stack product cases/freight of varying sizes and weights throughout the shift; product generally ranges from approximately 60 to 90 pounds, depending on the location.
