Position Overview

The Medically Vulnerable People (MVP) Program encompasses a diverse range of responsibilities aimed at assisting vulnerable populations. This program specifically focuses on elderly and medically fragile individuals facing homelessness, providing them with safe and accommodating non-congregate emergency shelter. As a member of The Road Home, you will contribute to a shelter system that serves over 160 individuals each night.

Role Summary:

As a Housing Advocate, your responsibilities will include:

1. Delivering exceptional customer service to medically vulnerable clients, addressing both their immediate needs and connecting them with resources beyond temporary shelter.

2. Monitoring and regulating shelter activities to ensure compliance with established rules and procedures, with a keen focus on the unique requirements of medically vulnerable individuals.

3. Providing clear and detailed information to residents regarding shelter rules and procedures, while considering their medical conditions.

4. Assisting in maintaining a clean and safe environment, identifying special needs, and referring them to supervisors as necessary. This includes basic cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, and ensuring workspaces are orderly and ready for the next shift.

5. Managing phone communications, taking messages, and responding to inquiries from the public, particularly addressing medical concerns of callers.

6. Collaborating as part of a dedicated team focused on serving the medically vulnerable in our community.

7. Following the guidance of the Shift Supervisor/Lead, with particular attention to the needs of medically vulnerable individuals.

Training and Development:

As an Advocate, you will receive training to:

1. Assist in conflict resolution among residents, with a focus on health-related aspects.

2. Document incidents when necessary, maintaining accurate logs that capture both housing and health-related information.

3. Provide crisis intervention when needed and liaise with community resources such as emergency medical services and law enforcement, ensuring a medically informed approach.

Qualifications:

- High School Diploma or GED is required.

- Strong customer service skills, effective communication, and professionalism in challenging situations, particularly those involving medical concerns.

- Ability to multitask and remain composed in high-pressure and unpredictable environments, recognizing the urgency of medical situations.

- Proficient computer skills.

- Sound decision-making capabilities, particularly regarding health-related issues.

- Openness to learning effective boundary-setting techniques and demonstrating the ability to maintain appropriate boundaries with medically vulnerable clients.

- Cultural responsiveness and the ability to engage with clients from diverse racial, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds with respect and openness.

- Awareness and sensitivity to diverse populations, contributing to the agency's commitment to enhancing cultural awareness.

- Willingness to accept supervision, direction, and constructive feedback.

- Desire to work collaboratively within a diverse and dynamic team.

- Reliability and dependability.

- Commitment to learning and applying Trauma-Informed Care principles.

- Familiarity with the Housing First philosophy.

- Successful completion of a pre-employment background check and drug screening is required.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

- Ability to stand and/or walk for extended periods.
