POSITION:
  • Surgical Technologist
DEPARTMENT: Clinical – Operating Room

SUMMARY:
The primary role of the surgical technologist is to provide essential support to the surgeon during surgical interventions. This includes ensuring the sterilization of instruments and supplies required in the operating room (OR) suite.

This position operates under the overall guidance of the Administrator/Director of Nursing and directly collaborates with the circulating nurse.

The responsibilities primarily focus on maintaining the sterility of instruments and supplies while adhering to aseptic techniques in the OR.

I. POSITION DUTIES
Patient Care: Ensures safe patient care by effectively assisting the surgeon during surgical procedures.

Aseptic Technique:
Upholds sterile practices in the OR throughout surgical procedures and during the processing of instruments and supplies.

Communication:
Maintains effective communication with all members of the OR team.

Inventory Control:

Ensures the safe packaging of sterile supplies in sufficient quantities to meet the surgical schedule demands. Responsible for restocking the sterile room while adhering to proper ordering and storage protocols.


  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of aseptic principles and practices.
  • Assumes responsibilities as assigned within the operating room.
  • Scrubs for surgical procedures as designated.
  • Communicates any issues that arise during surgical procedures to the circulating nurse.
  • Displays knowledge of equipment, instruments, supplies, and procedures.
  • Assists in cleaning the operating room before and after surgical interventions.
  • Responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and sterilization of instruments as assigned.
  • Operates sterilizers as required and maintains quality control documentation.
  • Restocks sterile rooms and sink areas in the hallway.
  • Participates in the orientation of new surgical technologists and assists in cross-training others in their areas of expertise.
  • Contributes to the Quality Improvement Program as necessary.
  • Engages in team meetings.
  • Initiates sponge and sharp counts as needed.
  • Performs additional duties as required to ensure patient safety and comfort, as well as the efficient operation of the facility.

III. CONTACT WITH OTHERS
Internal: Staff in clinical operations, business office, and contract personnel
External:
Physicians, Allied Health Professionals, patients, Physicians' office staff, representatives of the medical industry, consultants, and professional peers.

IV. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS
Some overtime beyond regularly scheduled hours may be necessary to provide patient care. Additionally, on-call duties may be required. Due to the nature of procedures in the OR and patient care considerations, this role can be demanding and fast-paced.

V. POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Physical and mental stamina is required, including walking, standing, and the ability to move patients. There is potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and other hazardous materials. Personal protective equipment should be utilized as necessary. A comprehensive understanding of operating room techniques, strong organizational skills, flexibility, effective communication abilities, and the capacity to prioritize tasks are essential.

VI. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
Must possess knowledge of and be able to implement aseptic techniques. Anticipating the surgeon's needs and acting accordingly is crucial. A high degree of judgment and initiative is required, along with the ability to follow instructions meticulously and act efficiently and rationally in emergencies. Interacting cooperatively and supportively with other surgical team members is essential, along with maintaining discretion and ethical judgment.
