POSITION:
  • Surgical Technologist
DEPARTMENT: Clinical – Operating Room

SUMMARY:

The primary role of the surgical technologist is to deliver direct support to the surgeon throughout surgical operations. This role also encompasses ensuring the sterilization of instruments and supplies required in the operating room.

This position operates under the overall guidance of the Administrator/Director of Nursing and works closely with the circulating nurse.

The responsibilities of this role primarily focus on maintaining the sterility of instruments and supplies while adhering to aseptic techniques in the operating room.

POSITION DUTIES
Patient Care:

Ensures safe patient care for the surgical patient by effectively assisting the surgeon during procedures.


Aseptic Technique:

Upholds sterile practices in the operating room during surgical procedures and while processing instruments and supplies.


Communication:

Facilitates effective communication with all members of the operating room team.


Inventory Control:

Ensures the safe packaging of sterile supplies in sufficient quantities to meet the demands of the surgical schedule. Responsible for restocking the sterile room while observing proper ordering and storage of supplies.


  • Exhibits knowledge of aseptic principles and practices.
  • Takes on responsibilities based on the assigned operating room.
  • Scrubs for surgical procedures as designated.
  • Communicates any issues that arise during surgical procedures to the circulating nurse.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with equipment, instruments, supplies, and procedures.
  • Assists in cleaning the operating room before and after surgical procedures.
  • Responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and sterilizing instruments as assigned.
  • Operates sterilizers as assigned and maintains quality control documentation.
  • Restocks sterile rooms and sink areas in the hallway.
  • Participates in the orientation of new surgical technologists and aids in cross-training others in their areas of expertise.
  • Contributes to the Quality Improvement Program as needed.
  • Engages in team meetings.
  • Initiates sponge and sharp counts as necessary.
  • Performs additional duties as required to ensure patient safety and comfort, as well as the efficient operation of the facility.

Circulating RN


CONTACT WITH OTHERS

Internal: Staff in clinical operations, business office, and contract personnel
External: Physicians, Allied Health Professionals, patients, Physicians' office staff, representatives of the medical industry, consultants, and professional peers.


POSITION CHARACTERISTICS

This role may require some overtime beyond regular work hours to provide patient care. Additionally, on-call duty may be necessary. Due to the nature of procedures in the operating room and patient care issues, this position can be stressful and fast-paced.


POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Physical and mental stamina is required, including walking, standing, pushing, and pulling to move patients. There is potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and other hazardous materials. Personal protective equipment should be utilized as necessary. A thorough understanding of operating room techniques, strong organizational skills, flexibility, effective communication skills, and the ability to assess priorities are essential. A professional image and the ability to manage stress are also important.


POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

Must possess knowledge and the ability to execute aseptic techniques. Anticipating the surgeon's needs and acting accordingly is crucial. A high degree of judgment and initiative is required, along with the ability to follow instructions carefully and act efficiently and rationally in emergencies. The ability to interact cooperatively and supportively with other surgical team members is essential. Discretion and ethical judgment are necessary, as well as the ability to work well with others.
