SUMMARY:
The primary role of the surgical technologist is to provide direct support to the surgeon during surgical interventions. This includes ensuring the sterilization of instruments and supplies required in the operating room (OR) suite.
This position operates under the overall guidance of the Administrator/Director of Nursing and works closely with the circulating nurse.
The responsibilities primarily focus on maintaining the sterility of instruments and supplies while adhering to aseptic practices in the OR.
I. POSITION DUTIESPatient Care: Ensures safe patient care by effectively assisting the surgeon during surgical procedures.
Aseptic Technique:
Upholds sterile practices in the OR throughout surgical procedures and during the processing of instruments and supplies.
Communication:
Maintains effective communication with all members of the OR team.
Inventory Control:
Ensures safe packaging of sterile supplies in sufficient quantities to meet the demands of the surgical schedule. Responsible for restocking the sterile room while adhering to proper ordering and storage protocols.
- Exhibits knowledge of aseptic technique principles and practices.
- Takes on responsibilities as assigned in the operating room.
- Scrubs for surgical procedures as designated.
- Communicates any issues that arise during surgical procedures to the circulating nurse.
- Demonstrates familiarity with equipment, instruments, supplies, and procedures.
- Assists in cleaning the operating room before and after surgical interventions.
- Responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and sterilization of instruments as assigned.
- Operates sterilizers as assigned and maintains quality control documentation.
- Restocks sterile rooms and sink areas in the hallway.
- Participates in the orientation of new surgical technologists and assists in cross-training other technicians.
- Contributes to the Quality Improvement Program as needed.
- Engages in team meetings.
- Initiates sponge and sharp counts as necessary.
- Performs additional duties as required to ensure patient safety and comfort, as well as the efficient operation of the facility.

III. CONTACT WITH OTHERS
Internal: Staff in clinical operations, business office, and contract personnel

Physicians, Allied Health Professionals, patients, office staff, representatives of the medical industry, consultants, and professional peers.
IV. POSITION CHARACTERISTICS
This role may require overtime beyond regular working hours to ensure patient care. Additionally, on-call duties may be necessary. Due to the nature of procedures in the OR and patient care responsibilities, this position can be demanding and fast-paced.
V. POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Physical and mental stamina is necessary, including walking, standing, and the ability to move patients. There is potential exposure to blood, body fluids, and other hazardous materials. Personal protective equipment should be utilized as needed. A thorough understanding of operating room techniques, strong organizational skills, flexibility, effective communication skills, and the ability to prioritize tasks are essential. A professional demeanor and the ability to manage stress are also important.
VI. POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
Must possess and be able to implement aseptic techniques. Anticipating the surgeon's needs and acting accordingly is crucial. A high degree of judgment and initiative is required, along with the ability to follow instructions meticulously and respond effectively in emergencies. Collaboration with other surgical team members in a supportive manner is essential. Discretion and ethical judgment are necessary, as well as the ability to maintain positive working relationships.
