Role Responsibilities and Qualifications

As a Critical Care Registered Nurse in the Float Pool, your responsibilities will include conducting patient assessments, formulating care plans, implementing and evaluating care strategies. You will oversee and assess the care provided by non-licensed team members.

Float Pool nurses are expected to adapt to various St. David's HealthCare System facilities, working in units where they possess competencies and may be assigned to units below their competency level with adjusted responsibilities.

  • Conduct and document patient assessments upon admission.
  • Develop comprehensive care plans, including discharge strategies, and modify them based on patient responses to treatment.
  • Document nursing interventions and patient outcomes.
  • Provide educational resources to patients and their families regarding care and treatment options.
  • Administer medications and perform treatments in accordance with hospital protocols.
  • Carry out venipuncture, manage IV fluids, and administer IV medications.
  • Review and ensure the execution of new physician orders, documenting them accurately and coordinating with other departments.
  • Alert the Charge Nurse and/or physician of any changes in patient condition.
  • Deliver precise and relevant patient information reports to the incoming shift to maintain continuity of care.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in an Intensive Care Unit.
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Texas or a Compact Registered Nursing License (Texas license must be obtained within 90 days of hire).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification as per St. David's Healthcare policy.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required within 60 days of hire.
  • Completion of Advanced Trauma Nursing Course (CATN) or Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) certification within one year of hire.
